((Author's Note: Dedicated to Yossi Paley, may his memory be a blessing.))
If only we knew why we suffer,
We'd be wise beyond belief.
But half of everything is a mystery,
Even when we stop and think.
Although we may not understand Her,
On our God we still should rely.
For if anyone stopped to believe Her,
They should think and ask themselves why.
Why did such-and-such happen?
Why did so-and-so have to die?
What is the meaning of everything?
I just don't understand you, God.
If everyone lives to be happy,
And we serve the Lord with joy,
Then how can there be so much sorrow?
God expects us to just let go?
I don't believe that the suffering
Is really, truly, the key
To unlocking our understanding.
No, it's what we learn as we grieve.
What are the lessons learned here?
There are many. How do I know?
Because She never takes away
If we don't receive in return.
If only we knew what God's thinking,
Why She does things every day.
But out of our love and our fear for Her,
We say never to question our faith.
But maybe we are all wrong,
And questioning helps us to find
The truth and power and justice
Whom we like to call the Divine.
I don't understand why things happen.
And maybe I never will.
One thing I know: although She don't show,
God is with us, always.
If only we knew why things happen.
We'd be on a level with God.
So Yoss, I dunno why you had to go,
But in my heart, you're still alive.
