NightTide

The sky, so black and full of stars
Is cloaked by heavy fog.
And all are fast and sound asleep -
The cat and bird and dog.
The flashing lights of pulsing veins
Dance still across the sky.
And all but I am in their bed -
It's just the world and I.

The light of Luna, flowing pure
Is lost beyond my sight.
And I can hear, with bated ear,
The sirens of the night.
I crouch beside the hollow ledge
And watch the tress at play
Bedimmed with shadows thick as scarves
That are abed by day.

The light of sun is fast forgot
For darkness rules that land.
And he and I are bosom friends
That stride forth hand in hand.
We laugh and play with sun by day
But sing beneath the stars.
For there, our masks are cast away
And wounds fast fade to scars.
