The Game
By: Alexis Roberts

Sitting
Waiting
Watching
Staring at the board

An equal found
A challenge declared
Pieces set in place
Moves planned out

So I sit, waiting for you to begin
To move queen’s rook forward
The counter should be simple
But the rules are lost to me

My feints stripped away
No masks afforded to me
Now I play naked before you
Learning this game a new

Discovering the rules
In your moves
Learning myself
In my own

Trying to guess your next move
Planning my own
Watching your reactions
To staring at the board

My only option to sit
To watch you position your pieces
For a move to bring change
To wait for the inevitable Mate
