That Time
The sound of the car in the driveway
made my very heart freeze
made me terribly frightened
and made me weak in the knees.
Nooo! my mind screamed
as she walked in the door
the chill in my spine
in my very core.
My brother came out
right into her path
felt the blunt of her blows
her unyielding wrath.
She hollered, "You're DEAD
you evil little boy!"
then my poor brother
aimed to annoy,
said, "That's funny, you'd think
Id've stopped walking around."
giving her a reason to hit
a reason to pound.
I just stood there silent
with my eyes on the floor
I just couldn't watch
her hit him anymore.
My eyes rose
when she pulled out the gun
then pointed it at
her very own son.
The bullet shot out
the sound did echo
as he fell to the ground
ever so slow.
My last bubble of calmness disappeared
at the first thought of death
as he sucked in and held
his last shuddering breath.
His body went limp
his lips already blue
I couldn't decide
just what I should do.
So I lost it and tackled
my mom to the ground
my logic and reason
nowhere to be found.
That's how I ended up here
in this room with white walls
nobody listening
to my hysterical calls.
Once they give me my meds
I'll be just fine
until the next morning
when I remember that time...
