Chapter Seven

Bunny began to cut pieces of the pie for her and Damian. She still felt weak, but she knew she hadn’t eaten in days and she should eat something soon. “What would you like for supper tonight?” she asked.

“Something I can help cook. I don’t want you on your feet too much yet, love.” He said devotedly as she put the pie down in front of him. She sat down beside him and began to eat. Bunny laughed softly.

“Dear, you don’t know how to cook…” Damian blushed and nodded. “How about stew? You can help stir it.” She said, knowing that she could do the chopping of the vegetables easily enough while sitting down, and it was something nourishing that could last a few days. Damian nodded. He loved Bunny’s stew; actually, he just loved her cooking in general.

“I think we have some salted beef left over from the cow that Jason and I slaughtered last fall. I’ll go check.” He stood up from the table, left, and shortly came back with a package of meat wrapped in paper. He put it onto the counter, and came back to sit down with here. “We’ve got some beef. We don’t have much in ways of vegetables right now… I think we may have some potatoes and maybe some squash…” he began, rubbing his chin.

“Damian,” Bunny laughed, “You don’t put squash into stew…” Damian grinned.

“That’s why you do the cooking, my dear. I’ll go and see what we have.” He left the room again and Bunny went to see Emily. She was sleeping peacefully in her crib, her perfect little hands balled up in fists. Bunny wanted to hold Emily, but didn’t want to wake her. She heard Damian into the other room, so she left Emily after stroking her cheek affectionately. She began to chop the vegetables to make the stew; singing happily to herself as Damian fetched some water for the stew from the well. For once in her life, she felt truly at peace. She had a loving, devoted husband; a beautiful baby girl and they had their health. She felt as if nothing in the world could go wrong.
