I was a little disappointed to find that the town really was as it appeared, a small collection of houses and various other buildings, all centred around one building which looked like a big church. I assumed the priests would be there, and was happy to have that confirmed by the General as he led me inside the town. Many people turned and looked at me, which I must say I found really spooky. A few caught sight of the glass pendant and had begun to bow down in the street, which made me feel quite embarrassed: I hadn't done anything to deserve their respect, but I was being treated like a member of royalty already. It was uncomfortable, and I was pleased to get inside the church.
The priests welcomed me in with quick bows and indications to go upstairs, to the main hall of the church. I looked back as I climbed the stairs, and saw nothing but joy on their faces. But how could that be? I hadn't done a damned thing, save finding a lost necklace. How could they be sure it was me who was destined to save them? I couldn't even think about it at the time, I was so confused. I missed my home already, by this point I had been away from my home for one week, and I was wondering how my family and friends were. I missed them so much, but it was hard to concentrate on anything at that point in time.
I was led forward, towards the altar, where a young priest stood. Just looking at him I would have guessed that he was about my age, certainly not much older than myself. He too bowed before me, then stepped slowly towards me, holding out his hands. Without thinking too much I held out my hands to him and took his hands in mine. He smiled at this.
" So you are the descendant of Lunaris. It is an honour to meet you my lady. By what name may we call you?" he said in a gentle voice.
"My name is Maranisa" I said, still a little unsure of the whole situation.
"A wonderful name. Please, allow me to show you to your chambers. You shall rest tonight, for we shall be working hard tomorrow."
It wasn't really like I had a choice in the matter, so I followed him back towards the entrance, turning at the bottom of the stairs to proceed into the main foyer of the church, and through to the bedrooms. One had been prepared especially for myself, and though it was a little on the basic side, it was very pleasant and relaxing. I had the room to myself, and I was glad of it: no way did I want to share with the General who had brought me here, he was far too grumpy. And of course, male. I threw back the covers on the bed, undressed and climbed in, pulling the cover back over me. I fell asleep pretty quickly, the stress of the past week overwhelming me.
The warm feeling of before re-entered my body. In my mind I could feel the presence of the Griffin fill the room. I didn't need to open my eyes to know it was standing at the foot of my bed, watching me. It rested a paw on the bed and leaned forward. I kept still, and it moved round to the side of the bed, still looking straight at me. It raised its paw to my head and everything went red. Slowly the world faded into deeper shades of red until black consumed it. I opened my eyes to find myself surrounded by priests, whilst the Griffin looked on. There was nothing else here, though somehow I wasn't scared. The priest I had met earlier was the first to speak.
"Welcome Maranisa, descendant of Lunaris. It is time for you to begin practicing your magic. We have brought you to your unconscious to do this, it'll make your mind a lot stronger. It also shouldn't tire you out too much whilst you're here, which means that you will be able to practice calling later. Well, it's time for you to begin." He said, moving closer to me and taking my arm. He led me away from the group of five that was left and turned me so I was facing him.
"So what do I do?" I asked, eager to begin.
"First you need to concentrate. Close your eyes, feel the rhythm of your body and banish any other thoughts. Once you have done that, you should feel the raw energy of magic within you. You need to take this force with your mind, and cover yourself in it. After that, you need to practice channelling the magic to make it do what you want it to do. But keep it simple, there's no way you have enough power for anything too spectacular yet." He replied, backing away from me.
I began to concentrate as he had told me, until the only thing I could feel was my own heartbeat. I could feel something. else, something inside my. soul. bubbling and rising. It was the raw magic that was within me. Without moving my body, I stretched the magic until it was entwined with my soul. This didn't feel right at the time, as if it wasn't enough. It felt like a gaping hole was there. On the outside, the priests looked on as my soul had somehow detached from my body, though not completely. They had witnessed the semi-transparent outline fill with thin, green strands of light, wrapping themselves around the soul, eventually covering it. Contained within the outline, the magic began to swirl, creating an effect similar to marbling. The soul, now filled with energy, reattached itself fully to the body, which I was glad to feel.
I crossed my arms across my chest and began to imagine what I wanted to happen with the magic I had covered myself with. I lowered my left arm and held out my right arm in front of me. In my mind I imagined a stream of this energy crawling slowly down my arm in a rough line, and leaving my hand through the centre of my palm. It gathered in the air, forming a sphere. After a little while I imagined the end of the line, and the sphere began to form in reality. I opened my eyes as it formed, and watched it grow. I hadn't noticed the strain I had been putting on myself: I was sweating so much that I was forming my own puddle beneath me, mixed with it the blood that was now streaming from my nose. I closed my eyes again and willed the magic back into me, the same way as I had made it form the sphere in front of me.
To my surprise I didn't fall to the floor when I called the sphere back; in fact, at that point I had never felt better. The energy of the magic combined in my soul had made me devoid of pain, though I was now aware of what was going on. All six priests bowed and left, and I woke up, back in reality myself. Although in the other reality I had suffered from using my magic, in this one I hadn't. I was completely refreshed and ready to go. The Griffin had long gone, and there was no sign that it had been anywhere near me. During the night, someone had taken the liberty of providing me new clothes, which consisted of a long beige skirt and a beige off the shoulder top. Sandals had been provided, and a length of shimmering beige material had been left. I dressed quickly, using the material as a temporary bandanna for my head.
I made my way back towards the alter, where the priest I had first met was standing. He opened his arms to me and gave me a beaming smile. I couldn't help but smile back and gave him my hands. He let go of my left hand and led me up some stairs into a small courtyard. The view was strangely disappointing, with the village being surrounded only by green fields. There was nothing else there, and it made the place feel a lot emptier than it was. It looked almost desolate from where I was, at the highest point of the village.
"It is time for you to begin." He said, interrupting my train of thought. I nodded and awaited his instructions.
"You must do the same as before, but instead of calling the magic to you, you must find the Griffin and call on him instead."
Again I nodded, and closed my eyes, channelling my energy into my soul. A flicker of fire could be seen forming a circle around my feet, both in the real world and in my own mind. I didn't know the Griffin's name, or even if he had one, so I began to pray to it, in the hope that he would hear it and answer. A rough barking sound could be heard in the back of my mind. The Griffin was answering my call. I asked for it to come forth, and could feel its presence. As the Griffin came closer within my mind, the circles multiplied until they filled the courtyard and in my mind until I could no longer see the end of them. It stepped forward onto the circles, sending small beads of energy along the rings and creating patterns which resembled small Griffins in different poses and stances, all glowing the same as the fiery circle.
"I know who you are. I know what you need to do. But you are still uncertain of me. I can help you, guide you. But I can only do this if you are willing to let me. Are you?"
"Yes. But I don't understand why I have this power, why I never knew I had it, and why I have never used it before. Or how I got here for that matter. Can you answer those questions?"
"All but the last. Lunaris was born with immense power, though having been brought up in this world she had full control of it and was able to develop it at an early age. By the end she could almost control anything, until Neros murdered her. Through the dimensions, descendents of hers were born, scattered throughout time and space, each with their own part of Lunaris within them. But only the one with the necklace could harness their power, since hers was stored in the necklace." The Griffin's deep voice resounded through my head as it answered. Without thinking about it I began to roll the pendant of the necklace in between my thumb and forefinger.
"That's why you didn't know and couldn't use it, and why you can now. I do not know how you were brought here. Only Fate can answer that."
"That's convenient. Do you have a name?"
"Yes. My name is Eshar. May I have permission to use your name?"
"Of course. Let's show you to the real world again Eshar."
He nodded and faded out of my mind, as a small sphere of fire appeared not too far from me on the courtyard. I opened my arms to it, and a pair of mighty wings spread out from the edges of the sphere, followed by the formation of the legs, body and tail. As the Griffin stepped forward he flicked his wings out and lifted his head up out of what was left of the sphere, finally materialising into a fully formed Griffin. He bowed to me, and I did the same. The priest made his way to me, a beaming smile on his wrinkled face.
"Well done. He is beautiful. His name?"
"Eshar." I replied, walking forwards towards Eshar and reaching out to him and toughing his neck. His feathered neck was soft, like new down on a chick, and was a dusty brown colour, tinted at the edges with gold. The feathers ran smoothly into fur where his torso finished, the fur being a similar shade of brown, but without the gold. Unusually, he had paws instead of the claws I had seen Griffins portrayed as having, and his paws were large, about the size of a Lion's. His hind legs also had paws rather than the horse's legs they usually had. His tail flicked from side to side as he folded his wings and appeared to smile. His voice began to rumble in my head again.
"I cannot talk to you by normal means, only through telepathy." He said. I nodded and smiled. The priest walked down the stairs and back into the church briefly, before entering the small village itself. I followed him, and Eshar followed me. Outside, a waiting crowd had gathered to see what I had accomplished. Their faces beamed as they witness the Griffin walk through the door of the church and follow me through the crowd for a bit. I felt proud of myself; I'd managed to call Eshar by myself. I couldn't help but beam. After a while of this I was led back into the church.
"It is time for you to dismiss me. You must rest." Eshars voice called. I answered it with my mind, my voice echoing.
"How do I do that?"
"You must withdraw from me and send me back to where you called me from. Just concentrate and you will do it."
"Thank you Eshar"
I did as he had instructed and watched as he became an embodiment of fire, then re-formed into the sphere, and finally shrunk until he no longer existed in this reality for the time being. For the whole time he had been out, we had sustained each other with each other's magic, which meant that I hadn't felt any of the impact of calling. Shortly after I had dismissed him, I could feel my body aching, and I began to fall asleep on the spot, drowsy from the energy it had taken to dismiss him. I was guided back to my room and gently lowered into my bed. As soon as my head hit the pillow, I was asleep, dreaming of home and the Harvest.
