A/N: I know, I know, I changed it. Tiff said that I needed more emotion, and so here it is, more emotion.
Disclaimer: I based the gods and the idea of the Ragnarok off of Norse myths, besides that, everything is mine, MINE!!! Muahahaha… that means if you steal from me, I’ll go into sue mode and you will pay!! *Evil glare* So don’t you dare steal from me. But, besides that, I’m pretty nice if you’re nice to me.
The Immortal War, the War of Gods, whatever name different people call it, it will all refer to the one war that devastated the worlds. For then years, the Great War was kept well inside the immortal lands of Asgard and Vanaheim. The Aesir gods led by Odin and the Vanir gods led by Loki battled ferociously, neither side giving in. No mortal was supposed to experience the pain of the war. That was how things were supposed to be, but that was not what had happened.
From some accident, the war leaked over to the mortal planes. Chaos and destruction were everywhere, even the isolated elven lands of Alfheim were destroyed. Midgard, the realm of humans, suffered the most damage because most humans were not gifted with magic. Balder, son of Odin, went to the mortal realms to aid Midgard. Unfortunately, Loki tricked Balder’s brother, Hodur, into killing Balder. Hodur, who was blind, had no idea what he was doing.
Balder’s death gave the Vanir a huge advantage, and they soon overpowered the Aesir, forcing them into submission. To keep the peace between the gods, Odin gave into Loki’s request of sending his infant daughter to be reborn in the mortal plane – as a mortal.
Meanwhile, King Phillip of Midgard made a desperate attempt to save his country. He made a deal with a sorceress named Sophia. Sophia would use her magic to save Midgard and in return King Phillip must give his unborn child to her, if that child is a girl. So, Midgard was saved and peace was restored, for then…
Prologue: The Child Born to Die.
An ear-piercing scream rang through the castle halls, originating form a medium-sized room. Servants rushed around the castle, bringing supplies to and from the room. One maidservant wrapped a wailing infant in blankets and walked to the head of the bed. “My queen, it’s a girl.”
Queen Ellina’s pain filled eyes widened in shock and remorse. “No, it can’t be,” she sobbed. “My child cannot be a girl!”
The servant just handed Queen Ellina her daughter, afraid to say anything more. Tears formed in her eyes, also. The queen clutched the baby to her chest, not wanting to let go. Salty tears flowed freely from her eyes, wetting the blankets that were wrapped around the infant girl. Just then, King Phillip entered the room. He opened his mouth to question if his child is a boy or girl, but closed it upon seeing his queen. He knew, judging from the way his queen was crying tears of sorrow instead of joy, that his child is a girl. His heart throbbed as he made his way to the bed. He knew that his daughter is doomed.
“I don’t want to give her to Sophia,” Queen Ellina whispered, her voice broken with sobs. “I don’t want her to leave. She’s mine, my daughter…”
“Shh… don’t talk, everything will be alright,” King Phillip embraced the queen, comforting her to the best of his ability. Tears threatened to spill form his eyes, but he held them back. He must stay strong for his queen and daughter. To cry meant that there was no hope whatsoever. There is always hope – no matter how small – for his daughter. He began to regret the deal he made with Sophia. He knew she was a dark sorceress, but he ignored that fact because his country was nearly obliterated. The safety of his country came at a cost, but what a great price to pay. The king closed his eyes, searching his brain for anything that could save his daughter, anything at all.
“Take, her, do what you must to save her,” Queen Ellina shoved her daughter into the king’s arms. “Take her away, the more I am with her the more attached I will be to her. It’ll be easier if you just take her now.”
“Very well, but you must rest. I will find a way to save her. I give you my word,” King Phillip kissed his queen on the forehead as he took the baby. He was a strong man, but it took him all his strength to walk out the door with his daughter while hearing the heart-wrenching sobs of the queen behind him. His face was set with determination; he knew what he needed to do. He promised that he would save his daughter, even if it meant that he must say goodbye to her.
He walked through the halls to an unfamiliar part of the castle. There, the cries of another child rose up to match the cries of his own. One of the servants gave birth to a boy just the day before. That infant boy may very well save the life of his daughter. If only the parents would agree. The man inside the room immediately stood up and bowed to the king when he entered.
“Your Majesty,” he said in a surprised but reverent tone. “What brings you here?”
“My child,” King Philip answered. “I need your help to save her. I do not want to giver her to Sophia. Will you help me? You are the only ones who can.”
The man glanced at his wife and son in the bed. This was the first time King Phillip asked a favor from them. Of course they should do whatever they could to help. “Certainly we will do our best to help you, my king, but surely there are more able people to carry out the job. We are but lowly servants –”
“But you are the only ones that can save my child,” the king looked over at the wailing infant boy in the mother’s arms. “If my daughter cannot have the throne by blood, then she shall have it by marriage.”
