Lir sat on the end of the dock, it's wooden planks felt soft against her sun-cracked skin. Dry reeds and tall cattails grew in the water towards her left. To the right was open water that spread out before her. The night was clear, and the crescent moon's reflection was disturbed by the ripples cause by the midnight sea breeze. She could hear the birds out in the water, loon calls, and behind her the water softly lapped at the sandy beach. But the sand was cold, and the dock was warmed by the moonbeams that lit her face. No other noises could be heard, just the sea and its belongings.

Lir sighed at the peacefulness and moved to lie on her belly, she propped herself up on her elbows and leaned her head over the water. It was jet black except for when it changed to dark blue when a ripple came. Lir dipped her slender hand into the water. It was warm and convinced her to wade in.

She walked to the other end of the dock, and onto the sand that cooled her feet, the grains slipping between her toes. She stood for awhile, just close enough for the water to nip at her toes when the miniscule crest broke on the white sand. Then slowly she walked into the sea, each step sending out dark ripples of their own. Her faded green dress began to billow with air as she reached a knee-high depth, the sound of the sea still playing in her ears. The dress began to weigh her down, so she lifted it over her head and laid it atop the water, to slowly drift ashore. The feeling of just the water against her skin charmed her more and she passed beyond the dock where the water began to reach her shoulders. She took a long breath and then dove beneath it charcoal surface. The night sounds were immediately muted and instead of the chirping of crickets in the reeds she heard the movements of the water coursing in her ears.

Lir turned and flipped in the water, letting her long white hair wrap around her and then up again for air, gasping and sputtering. She swam further and further out, letting the water carry her to where it thought best. She would dive for long periods of time, finding it easy to explore the sandy bottom by the light of the stars.

But before she could search to her heart's content, the light began to grow in the sky, the moon passed and the stars dimmed. Lir paddled and kicked until she reached the dock again. With great effort she pulled herself onto the wooden dock. She cast a look back at the water, it had lightened now that the sky was streaked with pink. The morning birds had begun their tunes, the reeds rustled and the sea lapped against the sands. And there is where she was found; Lir, daughter of the sea, with sand and seaweed tangled in her hair.
