This is an introductory chapter so you can know who everyone is in the story. The next chapter is when the story really will start. Have a lot of fun reading! P.S.- I like to imagine Gregory as Colin Firth and Susan as Julia Roberts. Just to let you know!
Gregory Adams was raised with every luxury his heart desired. His
father was a well-respected politician and expected his son to be the same.
Gregory, who was a very simple boy, never thought of being anything else
besides a politician and always enjoyed going to work with his father, but
of course well-respected jobs were limited in England during the late
1800's. Gregory was very plain; he had light curly brown hair that always
was in the same style. His brown eyes were always found reading a newspaper
or a criminal case for court. One day, while walking down the streets of
London, he looked up from his paper and saw a woman. She was very
beautiful, with her long raven black hair pulled up into a fashionable
style and her clothes were brand new and as fashionable as her hair. She
had a huge smile and it seemed to never fade. Despite Gregory's usually shy
demeanor, he felt compelled to talk to her.
"Hello, my name is Gregory Adams. What is yours?" he said holding out
his hand.
She smiled widely and took his hand, "I'm Guenever Luna. How do you
do?"
Gregory lightly kissed her hand as he had been raised to do when he
had met a lady. They spoke for a while and promised to meet each other at
the café the next day. Gregory fell in love with Guenever immediately. He
couldn't believe that he had, but it was something inside him he could not
control. This was entirely out of character for him; he would usually plan
things and have them in order. This had not been planned and was certainly
not in order for the next few days. They kept meeting until finally they
became a couple. They would appear everywhere together and they were the
talk of England, for Guenever was the daughter of an extremely important
man and Gregory was making a big name for himself as well.
After courting for three years, Gregory proposed. Their wedding was
the event of the season and everyone who was anyone was invited. However,
Gregory wouldn't care if they were married outside a dumpster, just as long
as he could be with Guenever forever. After they were married Guenever was
almost immediately pregnant. She was the most beautiful pregnant woman in
England and certainly the most important. Sadly, Guenever had a miscarriage
during the middle of her pregnancy. It was an extremely hard time for
everyone that was close to them and everyone tried to comfort them. Soon
after the miscarriage, Gregory's parent's died in a fire. Gregory went into
a horrible state of depression and stayed inside every waking moment.
His sister, Susan, immediately came to his side and helped around the
house. Gregory slowly picked himself up and got back to work, and after a
year everything had gone back to normal. Gregory and Guenever still wanted
a baby, so they tried again. They were very careful and made sure that
Guenever was not brought into too much excitement, finally the day came and
it was time to have the baby. Guenever went into labor on June 16th and
their daughter, whom Gregory named Charlotte after his mother, was born on
June 17th. Guenever, however, did not live to see her grow up. She had a
hard time in delivery and died soon after Charlotte had been born. Gregory
went into another state of depression, forcing Susan to come back to his
side. This time, she stayed. Susan had been living in America for most of
her life and had loved it there. But she could tell that Gregory needed her
there, so she stayed. Gregory didn't stay at Charlotte's side and she was
raised not really ever knowing him. Susan was her real mother, sort of.
Susan had auburn hair and a smile that lit up her entire face. She had
always wanted a child, but she had yet to marry, even though she had many
men after her, she hadn't found one that was for her or was what made her
happy.
Guenever's father, Arthur Luna, took pity on Charlotte and always
showered her with gifts and came to visit her. He loved to see his
granddaughter, for she looked almost exactly like her mother, except for
her hair. Her hair had the silkiness of Guenever's but was the same color
as Gregory's. Arthur respected Gregory as a businessman, but always hated
the way he treated his daughter.
Susan finally decided that Charlotte needed a nanny. She hired an
older woman by the name of Christina Proffitt. Susan finally went back hone
to America and found that the man that she had loved had married someone
else. She missed Charlotte terribly and wished to be at her side, but she
was stubborn and thought that the feeling would pass as time did. After a
month Susan went back to England, she had been overcome with grief about
not having Charlotte with her and needed to be with her. So she packed her
things and got in the first boat to England.
So now that is where everyone is, London England. Charlotte is
eighteen and has come out into society with her debutante ball not two
weeks ago. This is when our story begins.
