That Song Again

I thought I saw you again,

When dusk was done and the day was a wistful memory,

When the stars seemed clouded and the sun paled and crater’d,

I saw you in the crowd, the old smile, the old eyes.

Saw you next to me, once more.

I didn’t, don’t want the world to see me.

They wouldn’t understand.

I listened to that song again,

The guitar strings striking those cords we know so well—

Those words all too familiar to us.

Of giving up Forever for a touch

When the sweet answer was the shining Promise within your smiling eyes.

That song again, so true, so true:

Of marvelling in Irises!

The cords striking out in the dark like

The sure gift of light to these blind eyes.

So now that the shadows fall once more,

Now that those eyes that I have cherished so dearly,

Now that they hold only broken whispers and shattered memories,

Now gone are they, what have we?

Have we but the thought, the question,

Of giving up Forever to Give Up forever?

My love, we can only dream, my love,

When the world is breaking, when the diamond cities shatter like glass,

We can only dream, dearest,

Dream of light, dream of seeing,

Dream of those cords striking, the soft words ringing.

Remember, and look to the rising sun,

And smile once more.
