If I Could Write to God
by Joyce Reid

If I could write to God
I don’t know what I’d say.
Should I write a little poem
Or a long, involved essay?

Should I tell Him of the glories
Of this land where I was born?
Of the the many busy cities,
Of old dusty streets well worn?

Should I tell Him of the wisdom
In the minds He’s given to us?
Should I tell of the stupidities
We think of all too much?

Should I tell Him that this evening
After I am sleeping sound
And after daylight says good-night
The moon will light the ground?

Should I ask Him of the number
Of the hairs upon my head?
Or of the wild ponderings
I have while in my bed?

Should I ask creation’s father
If He’s seen the sun today?
Or if recently He noticed
The way butterflies play?

Should I tell Him of my fingers,
My eyes, my mouth, my nose?
I wonder, would He like to hear
What He already knows?
