Chapter 10
“Stop playing with your food, it’s gross.” Christian shook his head at her. He knew she was an adult, but as he looked at her now it seemed hard to believe.
“You’re no fun.” It wasn’t that she wasn’t hungry, she just had a lot on her mind. She had meant to ask him to tell her about himself but it never seemed like a good time. She knew there would probably never be a good time. “Hey Chris,” she pushed her food from one side of the plate to the other, “can I ask you something?”
“Sure, what’s up?”
“Um, well it’s about your ex, you never told me anything about her.” She felt awkward asking it, but her curiosity would not be denied.
“Why would I? We’re only spending time together because of the bet. That was your idea, remember? You don’t even like me, you just want to win, so why would I tell you my life history?” It wasn’t that he didn’t want to tell her, it was that he wasn’t sure what was behind her motivation in wanting to know.
“Maybe that was true before, but I thought we were starting to become friends. Don’t friends tell each other things?”
“Okay fine, so tell me your life story.”
“Ask away, I’ll answer, I have nothing to hide.” Another lie but she didn’t care. She knew that there was no question he could ask that would result in him learning about the experiment gone wrong.
“Who was your first love?”
“Grade 1, his name was Cory. I was convinced I was going to marry him one day.”
“Grade 1 doesn’t count. I mean real first love.”
“Grade 11, I was 16, his name was Matt, I dated him for 2 years and then we broke up. He was a year older and when he went to university it kind of caused some problems. Next question.”
“Not so fast, if you want details you have to give me some too.”
“Okay, I met him through a friend, I thought he was cute, she set it up so I could meet him. It was awkward at first but he was sweet and knew I liked him so he kept dating me anyways. After a while it got natural for both of us and then when he went away it was really hard for me. I’m not really a huge fan of change, and it scared me. I made things difficult and he ended it. It wasn’t horrible, I kind of saw it coming. There was no big fight, it was just done. But that was all a long time ago. Your turn.”
“I guess it’s only fair. Okay, her name was Mystie-.”
“Mystie? Seriously?”
“If you interrupt I won’t tell you.”
“Okay, sorry, go on.”
“Like I said, her name was Mystie, we dated for 4 years, and broke up last year. We met at work. She looked so cute in her server’s uniform that I couldn’t help myself. I asked her out, she said no. I kept persisting but she had a boyfriend. I didn’t care. I was certain we were soulmates and I wouldn’t give up. Eventually I started getting to her. Things went bad with her boyfriend and then we started dating. At first she was always mad, she blamed me for what happened but then one day she just walked up to me and said she forgave me. I don’t know how or why it happened, but she fell in love with me too. We were happy for a long time.”
“So why did you break up?”
“I proposed. She said that she loved me but wasn’t ready and didn’t know if she ever would be. And that was it, she broke up with me, quit her job, and I haven’t seen her since.”
“That’s kind of strange don’t you think, I mean she just disappeared.”
“Well there’s really nothing I can do about it now anyways.”
“See, I told you we could do this.”
“Do what?”
“This, talk, share, be friends, it’s not so hard.”
“Summer, you and I will never be friends.”
Never be friends? What was that supposed to mean? Maybe they weren’t best friends but she thought they were a little closer than acquaintances. “What do you mean?”
“Exactly what I said, you and I will never be friends.” He stood up quickly from his chair surprising Eternity and causing her to drop her fork. He placed his hands on the table and leaned across kissing Eternity as hard as he could without falling forward.
Surprise would be the simplest word to explain what she was feeling. It was completely unexpected but not entirely unwelcome. It scared her how good of a kiss it was and she felt herself wanting more. She wondered why she had never kissed him before and then she remembered. The bet. The bet was the reason she never kissed him and the bet was the only reason he was kissing her now. She chided herself for being so distracted with his personal life that she forgot what was really going on. Obviously he hadn’t forgotten though.
She pushed him off of her and wiped his kiss from her lips with the back of her hand. “What the hell do you think you’re doing? If you think you’re going to win the bet by forcing yourself on me you’ve got another thing coming.” She grabbed her purse and her jacket, and got up. “You can keep your damn car, I’m done.”
“Summer, calm down, that kiss wasn’t just about the bet, I think I have feelings for you. I wanted to kiss you to find out.”
“Liar! You don’t have feelings for me, you love Mystie, remember her? Deny it all you want but I know you still love her, go find her.”
“Mystie and I are over. We’ve been over for a long time. Don’t be mad, I kissed you because I like you… because I care, don’t make this something it’s not.”
“Like what, reality? You want to win, I can see it on your face. I’m not going to let you. I quit! So stop bothering me.” She turned to leave.
“Summer wait!” He grabbed her arm and spun her back to face him. “I’m not letting you out of this deal that easy. This was your idea remember?” He grabbed her other arm and pulled her in, kissing her again. She struggled against him but he persisted.
When she finally broke free she slapped him hard across the face. “I don’t know who the hell you think you are, but this game is over.” She stormed out of the restaurant and didn’t look back.
Sorry this chapter was kinda rushed, I just got so tired of it going so slowly that I kind of rushed through this part, I hope it was okay though
