Legacy of the Silver Kitsune
Chapter 1
By Bella~Rose01
For Reenxjay
Birds were singing; the sun was shinning; the sky was clear and a bright blue. Ah, the wonderful outside world, full of temptation as it always is when you’re stuck inside.
"Miss Peridot! Please pay attention," cried Mrs Hampton, half through explaining the current English assignment. Sakura’s attention, which had been attracted, to the window and its contents, like the positive and negative ions in two magnets. Except Sakura’s ion was her longing to be free of her gilded cage, the classroom of a school. Her school was just like any other, made out of concrete and bricks and had the same appel as a box of kitty litter.
"Yeah Sakura, has the peroxide gotten to your brain cells already?" called a voice from the back row; this comment was then followed by the rest of the guys in the back row chuckling. Sakura flicked a naturally blonde lock out her face.
"Well Brent, at least I don’t look like a beaver," retorted Sakura to the dark-brown haired, hazel-eyed, young lad who had a rather large overbite, the guys in the back row chuckled again. There was then a clashed hazel and green glaring contest across the room.
"That’ll be enough!" said Mrs Hampton giving each party a stern look.
"But they started it!" exclaimed Sakura and Brent, pointing to each other.
"And I’m finishing it, unless the both of you wish to stay after school and discuss the subject?" asked Mrs Hampton with a raised left eyebrow, looking from one to the other. They both fell silent. "Good. Now, this assignment is due next Monday-" but she was interrupted by a bell ringing signalling the end of school. "Your all excused, have a good weekend," and with that there was a scraping of chairs and the sound of hurried footsteps to their owners lockers. Sakura grabbed her bag shoved her English folder, pencil-case and diary inside as fast as she could, slammed her locker door shut, placed the lock in the hole and closed it securely shut. Sakura pushed the doors of the school open and quickly exited the school grounds. It wasn’t long till she came across the local pastry-shop, which sold the oh so tasty, circular-in-shape, with a hole in the centre, covered in cinnamon and sugar delicacies. But Sakura’s favourites were the jam-filled ones. Her mouth watered at the thought, you could usually smell them cooking a block away. Sakura opened the door to the shop and the bell above it jingled. She smiled at the elderly gentleman behind the counter.
"Good afternoon Sakura. The usual?" He asked as she reached the counter.
"Yes please Mr Morris!" said Sakura with a smile.
"Okay, half-a-dozen apple-fritters and half-a-dozen cinnamon doughnuts, coming up!" said Mr Morris and he walked through a swing door into the kitchen.
" Mr Morris? Can I please watch?" asked Sakura standing on tiptoe to see Mr Morris through the side window. Mr Morris laughed.
"Sure," said Mr Morris with a smile. Sakura beamed and walked around to the side of the bench, through the kitchen and over to where Mr Morris was making the batter. Shortly after, the batter was sizzling in oil; the whole time Sakura’s gaze never wavered. Mr Morris chuckled at her curiosity. Soon they were ready and Mr Morris placed them in a brown paper bag.
"That’s ten-dollars little lady," said Mr Morris. Sakura handed him a ten-dollar note. "Thank you kindly."
"Mr Morris? Can I go out the back-way? Please?" asked Sakura with big puppy-dog eyes.
"Hmmm… okay. But you be careful right?" said Mr Morris with concern. It was a dingy alleyway and he had his worries about a teenage girl walking through there alone.
"I’ll be fine, I learnt Karate, nobody better mess with me!" said Sakura with a cocky grin and with that she walked out the brown-timber rear-entrance door. She went this way because then she could catch the earlier train home. But today was going to be different, in many ways. She spied a home-less man sitting cross-legged at the other end of the alleyway, blocking her path. His hair was a greasy brown colour and it looked like he hadn’t heard of the invention of a shaver, or a shower for that matter.
"Hey there, little girl!" croaked the home-less man in a feeble voice.
"I ain’t no little girl Mister," replied Sakura, noticing the cardboard-box he held in his lap. "What’s in there?" she asked.
"Ah, their some puppies I’m trying to sell, but no-one will take them in… Would you like to buy one?" asked the home-less man. Sakura gingerly kneeled down and leaned forward. She saw what looked like four little silver fox puppies.
"Awww! They’re so adorable! How much are they?" asked Sakura instantly.
"Just like we’d hoped!" thought the seemingly home-less man. "They’re two dollars each,"
"What’ll happen to the ones that don’t get bought?" asked Sakura, fearing the answer.
"They’ll have to be killed," sighed the home-less man sadly. Sakura squealed, clearly terrified of the thought. "Like we would really kill such valuable specimen, you foolish child!" thought the home-less man
"I’ll buy them all! Here’s ten bucks, keep the change!" exclaimed Sakura chucking her last ten-dollar note at the home-less man’s feet and picking up the cardboard-box, not want to condemn any of them of a horrible fate.
"Affirmative, they are on the move," said the home-less man into a ear piece he had hidden under his shirt. She then walked as quickly as she could to the train station and caught the train just as it was coming in. She sat herself down on a window-side-seat. She took a better look at them; they were all sleeping quietly. The only one of them that she could tell apart from the others because this one (which was curled up in the centre) had a golden stripe along its tail. The others were pretty ordinary looking, except for the fact that regular fox puppies didn’t have silver fur. Sakura then decided to watch the passing fields out her window. Then out of the corner of her eye, she saw a much longer silver tail flick into view for only a second and then it was gone. Sakura rubbed her eyes. But she was soon distracted by her new pets waking and in search of food. They all looked up at her except for the smallest one, that one still lay fast asleep. But now that some of them were awake, she could tell a lot more differences between them. The one with the gold stripe along his tail also had golden eyes, then there was one with big, bright, blue eyes, and then the third one had pink eyes. Sakura guessed she was girl and the other two were boys. The girl looked a little more feline then the other two. The one with big, bright, blue eyes looked over the side of the box, propped up his paws and started sniffing at the bag of doughnuts sitting beside Sakura.
"Are you guys hungry?" asked Sakura. All three of them nodded. Sakura laughed. They looked so cute! "Who would ever wanna harm those adorable things?" she thought and got out some apple fritters and started giving them all little pieces. They held them in their tiny paws and started eating; the girl with pink eyes was the most daintily. They very soon gobbled up four of them.
"I think I should give you names…" said Sakura to herself. "Your name can be… William," she said pointing at the one with golden eyes and golden stripe down his tail. "Your name can be… Kevin," she said pointing at the one with big, bright, blue eyes. "And your name can be… Diamond!" she said pointing at the one with pink eyes. She looked very happy with her new name. Then they all started to crowd around the fourth puppy, this one wasn’t moving. Sakura picked it up gently. She opened it’s mouth and saw a bit of skin hanging on it’s tongue, she tugged at it and it became free, the puppy opened it’s eyes and started to rapidly breath. "The poor little thing!" Sakura cooed. "It couldn’t breathe, here have something to eat," the littlest one rapidly ate the food it was given. Sakura noticed that this one was a girl also and that she had green eyes, just like her. "I shall name you… Olivier," said Sakura stroking the fur on top of her head gently. The rest began to whimper about the food supply and the lack of one. "Here you go," she gave them each half a cinnamon doughnut. After they ate that they went back to sleep.

Dusk was approaching Sakura quickly as she walked through the forest, that on the other side held the sanctuary of her room. She was pondering what she was going to tell the rentals when all of sudden pounced a standing erect, silver fox, that was as tall as a fully-grown man. Sakura’s eyes went wide with astonishment. It’s long tail flicked backwards and forwards in an aggressive manner, its red eyes glaring into Sakura as it blocked her path. She also noticed it had a diagonal scar (if it was on a human) across his right pectoral muscle. "That’s what I saw on the train!" thought Sakura watching the creature’s tail swish from left to right, very much like a tennis match.
"Human, if you wish to live for longer then three Earth minutes, I suggest you hand me the box," spoke the silver fox. Sakura backed up a step and clutched the box tighter. "Running would be futile, resisting at all would be futile. Now, hand me the box!" drawled the silver fox.
"No! I won’t let you harm them!" said Sakura much braver then she felt.
"They are my children you primitive life form, I want them returned to me," smirked (or what was the equivalent to it) the silver fox. Then it twisted its ears backwards and forwards. It then lost the redness in its eyes to reveal big, bright, blue ones. "People are coming, they will take me and my infants away, to be tortured in methods your mind won’t be able to imagine, if you give them to me now, we have a chance of escaping," said the creature, desperation could be heard in it’s voice.
"I have a better idea," said Sakura. "Why don’t you come and hide in my house? You’ll be safe there," the silver fox looked confused, then suspicious.
"Why? Why are you giving up some of your shelter to me? You’re one of them too aren’t you? You’ve come to recapture me! I won’t go back! Never! You hear me?" the silver fox almost yelled at Sakura.
"Okay dude, take a chill-pill. I don’t even know you’re on about!" sighed Sakura. The creature’s ears flattened on its skull. Then peaked up again.
"They very close, they’ll be almost apon us in a few minutes!" said the silver fox.
"Well then, a sleep over my place it is then!" said Sakura. She then started running and the creature had no choice but to follow. Sakura ran all the way to her house, a streak of silver and a slight breeze whooshed past her. She was then at her house in five minutes, but the silver fox was already there.
"How’d you do that?" asked Sakura puzzled.
"My race has the ability to run faster then any human could," replied the silver fox. He staggered. Sakura saw that the silver fox had a cut across his upper-leg and it was oozing, what she guessed was blood, golden liquid. Sakura walked over to help him. Him shoved her aside.
"I don’t need your assistance…" the silver fox said and collapsed, but luckily, Sakura had put down the box and had caught him.
"Yep, you sure don’t…" she muttered. She then slung him over her shoulder and picked up the box. She then opened the door and ran up the stairs and turned right into her bedroom. She flipped the silver fox onto her bed and put the box next to him. She looked out her window and sure enough there was a S.W.A.T. look-a-like team where they were just standing moments before. Sakura looked over her new roommate and smiled. "I guess he was right…" she thought.
