The candle in the window

A candle burns in the window as the people pass.
An old man passes, sees the candle and thinks of his love lost.
A young girl passes, sees the candle and thinks of Hanukkah.
A scholar passes by, sees the candle and thinks of hope.
A teenage boy passes by, sees the candle and thinks of burning things.
A woman passes by, sees the candle and thinks of the warmth of family.
I look up from my desk, and see the candle burning in my window, shedding
light on my writing and hope that the power will come back on soon.
