Chapter 3 – Moon Sky…
Angela’s P.O.V.
I actually saw some of the guys pat their full bellies after we finished our scrumptious meal at Yum Cha. Some of the girls sat chatting, while we waited for the last person to finish. I turned my head over to Jeremy who was just finishing up the food on his plate. He finished and turned to me. “Hey Angela! You can pay now!” Guys looked bored so they left us some money and headed towards the arcade downstairs. Jay stayed with us. The girls had given me their share of the money earlier. We were only allowed to spend sixty dollars. We went over just slightly, because of some of the food that the guys had ordered. I leaned over the table to tell the girls that I was going to the counter to pay for our meal. The nodded and decided to wait by the exit.
Jay came along with me to pay at the counter. “Umm… excuse me?” The man behind the bar looked up and said “Yes miss?” I gave him the slip of paper that was on our table and pulled out my key card. “I’d like to pay for this.” He nodded taking the amount on the slip and punched it into the cashier. “That comes to a total of sixty-seven dollars.” He swiped the key card through he machine and turned it towards me. Jay looked away and I smiled, punching in my pin number.
Daniel’s P.O.V.
We walked back to the entrance of Yum Cha and found the girls there. It wasn’t raining as hard as it had been earlier; in fact, it’s only just a sprinkle now. The girls were talking. Angela popped out of the entrance of Yum Cha, with Jay and announced, “Well, were to next?” “Let’s go home you guys!” We passed the park and I decided to do something about the nagging feeling in the deep pits of my stomach. “Umm… *ahem* Hey you guys go on back without Mary and I. We’ve decided to visit the park for a sec.” I caught everyone’s attention and Mary, who happened to be standing next to me, turned to face me confused. I held her eyes for a second and she understood. “Yeah umm, we’ll see you guys later, or tomorrow ok you guys?” I looked up to find, Angela holding back a smile behind her hand, Alyssa smiling much too innocently, and the back of the other girls, who were trying to silence their laugher. The guys shrugged but Jeremy told me to get her back the cabins soon. I waved my hand nonchalantly and led Mary into the dimly lit park.
Ruben’s P.O.V.
After they left, the girls started to giggle slightly, and I found Angela and Alyssa whispering to each other, with evil glints in their eyes and mischievous grins on their faces. My stomach tied themselves into knots. I knew they were up to something bad. Alyssa nodded and came up to me with her hand out. I questioned her with my eyes and with the new look on her face; I knew instantly that she wanted the DigiCam. I pulled it out from my backpack and handed it over to her. Angela smiled and came up to us. “Ok Ruben. Alyssa has formulated a plan to spy on them. And I insist that you go and accompany her. We can’t have a defenseless young woman walking around in the middle of the night.” Alyssa scowled at her silently and Angela smiled. I shrugged my shoulders and we set off after Mary and Daniel.
Jeremy’s P.O.V.
The girls looked at their watches and found that it was seven-thirty. Roselle sneezed and the girls crowed around her seeing that she was red in the face. Jessica placed the back of her hand, gently on Roselle’s forehead. She gasped. “Roselle’s got a fever. And her temperature is…” She then placed the back of her hand on Jelai and compared it with Roselle’s. “…Burning up! We have to get her home!”
Angela brought out her cell phone and got Jessica to call for a taxi to come quickly, while she took off her sweater and placed it around Roselle’s shivering figure. She was still shivering, so I quickly took off my warm jacket and placed it on top of Angela’s sweater. Roselle turned to me and smiled. Angela placed a hand on my shoulder and mocked, “Didn’t know you could be so nice Jeremy.” She knew I was like that but I smirked anyways. “Me neither my DEAR cousin.” She glared at me before sitting down on a nearby wall, waiting for the taxi. Jay sat down next to her and they chatted in the dark.
Five minutes passed and soon enough the taxi came down the road. We filed in allowing Roselle more space than we had. I sat in the front passenger seat, while the others squished themselves the back. I almost laughed when I saw Jay’s slowly reddening face. He had good reason too. Being the only male, in the back seat with four girls, *squished* was pretty embarrassing. Angela was also sitting in the front passenger seat with me, and saw me grinning madly. I pointed at him at the back and when she realised that it was a Kodak moment, she clicked her digital camera in his direction. They stopped flustering with Roselle, to notice the flash. Angela quickly turned the photo into a protected file before the girls grumbled loudly about the photo.
A couple of minutes passed and we arrived home. I grudgingly paid the driver. The girls were helping Roselle into the cabin. We couldn’t tell our Year Leader that Roselle was sick, or she’d send her home and Roselle refused the fact that she would be sent home over a small fever. Roselle was put under Jessica’s nursing care for the moment and Jelai rushed to her bag to find her secret stash of Panadol, which she kept in case of emergencies. Angela helped get her some water, and Jay, Kate and I were sitting in the living room.
Angela came back out of the room, and sighed. She slumped over to the couch and sat next to me. I looked at her worriedly. She was having her migraines again. I could tell she had a concentrated look on her face and were massaging her temples hard. I felt sorry for her having to go through those agonizing headaches. I knew about them, she was having them more now. I nudged her slightly and caught her attention. She looked up at me and smiled tired. Kate stood up and bid her farewell. “Hey you guys sorry bout all this but *yawn* I’m getting sleepy and I should be getting back to my cabin.” Jay stood up after her and walked her to her cabin.
Angela walked over to the bedroom and came out again with her laptop. She placed it on top of the dinning table and switched it on. I walked over and peered over her shoulder. She was watching what Ruben and Alyssa were supposedly taping. The door clicked close and we both turned our heads to find Jay standing there. Angela turned her head back to the screen and Jay came walking over confused at why Angela was kind-of snobbing him and why we were over in the dinning area with the laptop open.
I pulled him away and explained it to him, trying to keep it as low as possible so that Angela couldn’t hear. I heard her sigh again, before I started my warning. “She’s got a migraine right now and I could tell that she really tired. Better not get in her way or else she could get pissy.” He smirked and replied, “Couldn’t that mean that it that certain time of the month?” My eyebrow rose. “No. It’s just not. Its only an agonizing headache. I’d be pissy too if I had what she has.” I thought he knew better and take my word for it. I turned back to Angela, who had fallen asleep on the chair.
Jessica and Jelai came back out of the room. “Roselle’s sleeping already.” I nodded at them and looked over to Angela again. They followed my gaze and found her. They sighed. I went over to her and kneeled down. I slid arms just under her legs and the other around her shoulders. I picked her slender figure up from the chair and turned to look at the girls. They hurried over to open a bedroom’s door and I placed her on the nearest bed. She mumbled tiredly, but slightly awake now and I came up close enough to hear. “Jeremy. Come to breakfast tomorrow ok?” I nodded and tucked her into bed. She closed her eyes and I closed the door behind me, as I exited the room.
Jessica’s P.O.V.
I watched Jeremy as he walked out of the room. “What’s that Jeremy?” I asked, pointing to the screen of the laptop. He glanced at it and replied “Umm.. Its whatever Alyssa and Ruben are seeing. Angela probably put a connection between the two. I nodded and ahh’ed. We crowded around the screen watching the scene.
[ from the DigiCam ]
Two figures sat on a lonely bench, which overlooked a small lake.
Mary: Daniel… What did you want to talk to me about?
Daniel: Mary…
He hesitated, and looked up when he felt Mary’s hand over his shoulder. He looked up and her eyes encouraged him to tell her. He nodded, cleared his throat and plunged forward with what he was saying.
Daniel: After camp… I’m going to China for a while to visit my family there.
Mary: That’s great!
She smiled and her pearly white teeth shone in the moonlight. Daniel looked down and finished his announcement.
Daniel: And to finish my studies.
Mary’s smile faded and her eyes saddened. Her eyes got teary and she focused at her hands, on her lap.
Mary: How long?
Daniel: Until I finish University.
Mary: 6 years right? Because you’re taking medicine?
Mary choked back a sob and Daniel turned to face her. He pulled her closer to him and wrapped an arm around her shoulders. Slowly, hot tears cascaded down her face and cheeks.
Daniel: Yeah…
Mary: I--I’ll m--iss you…
Daniel pulled her away slightly and wiped her tears away with his thumbs. He held her close.
Daniel: I--I ha--ve some--thing else t--to tell y--ou.
Mary pulled away, trying to look happy for him.
Mary: What is it?
He turned away.
Daniel: I…I…
Mary: What is it Daniel?
He looked back to look at her hopeful and waiting expression. Heat washed up to his face and he knew he was crimson. He controlled himself and looked her in the eye. He mumbled some words, but she heard.
Daniel: I…I love you Mary.
She looked surprised, but happiness was written all over her face. Her face was tinted pink, and she replied to his confession.
Mary: I--I love you too…
Daniel looked startled, but felt amazingly happy. So happy that he could scream out to the world his happiness.
Daniel: Really?!
Mary looked at him eyes twinkling and nodded. They drew closer, and it seemed that they were still a mile apart when their lips met. Mary closed her eyes, and it was a long moment before they parted. He smiled down at her and they snuggled close together looking at the view in front of them.
Ruben’s P.O.V.
I smiled at the courage of my best friend. Wow! He told her that he loved her. The knots in my stomach returned and I felt sorry for the way things had turned out. He told her all right, but at the wrong time. He should’ve told her ages ago. Now that he was going away there wasn’t much time for their love to blossom anymore. I felt sorry for them. Damn. I turned hearing Alyssa sigh and say, “Damn. Such bad timing he’s got. But at least he told her.” She turned to face me, knowing that I had heard. I nodded and turned off the DigiCam. “Let’s go. I think we should give them a little more privacy now.” She turned to leave and I grinned. “In case they see too!” We tried to avoid them seeing us and walked in the shadows.
We walked back to the cabins, which were not so far away. Alyssa and I were used to walking, having trained during soccer practices and games. We walked in eerie silence and soon enough we were on the porch of her cabin.
Alyssa’s P.O.V.
I turned to face Ruben, ready to thank him from walking me to the cabin door. He held out the DigiCam and said with a bit of amusement laced in his voice “Well you better get this to Angela before she gets us for taking so long.” His hand brushed mine as I took the DigiCam from his hand. It sent electricity up through my hand and up my arm. My whole body tingled with a warm sensation, just due to that small contact. I pulled my hand back clutching the DigiCam tightly, fearing that I could drop it. I looked at him and I forced a smile on my face. “Night Ruben.” He nodded and turned to leave but not before saying “Night Lis, sweet dreams.” Once he was out of sound’s reach, I mumbled beneath my breath, “I always do, coz they’re always filled of you.” I stood out there in the cold surprised I had let out that little comment. Surprised that something so mushy could have escaped this mouth of mine. I snapped out of my daze and realized that I was still standing outside in the cold. “Oh! The girls must be worried about me by now I better get in.”
I turned the knob and bumped into nearly ran into someone right in front of me. I just barely had time to recognize his face before I teetered, my balance was thrown off, about to fall backwards and painfully land on the floor. I braced myself for the impact, but after a few seconds none came. I curiously opened my eyes and found Jay’s hand holding mine. It had seemed that he had he had leaned forward and grabbed my hand just before I fell to the cold, wet floor. He grinned at me and set me back on me feet. “You ok there Alyssa? You seemed occupied in what ever you were thinking about just then.” I opened my mouth to talk. “I--I uh… yeah…” I regained my senses and manner and smiled. “Thanks for saving my butt. On your way back to your cabin?” He nodded. “Well night then, to the both of you.” Jeremy had appeared behind him and they walked out onto the porch. The were about to leave but Jeremy turned in time and said “We’ll see you in the morning. Angela invited us to have breakfast with you girls.” I nodded and they headed to the cabin, as I stepped inside mine.
To be continued…
A/N: hehe.. a little action going on there aye? With Daniel and Mary. But oh no! What is going to happen to them! They’ve only got a few weeks before Daniel leaves for China!
