The Descent

Devin yawned, stretching his lanky body so it hung over the park bench. He grimaced as his thoughts turned to last night. He tried to forget, but could not push it out of his mind. The way she looked at him for the last time, the last time she ever spoke to him was engraved in his mind forever.

Devin wandered through the city, ignoring the intense looks the citizens gave him. As he passed an apartment building, he stared up for a moment and continued his blind trek to the edge of the city.

He passed his former loves; sports, bars, and movies, without a second glance. Devin reached a bridge and continued to walk until he reached the middle of the bridge. A river flowed beneath the bridge, calm and placid. He stopped and walked over to the railing, staring at the river, its tranquility having a calming effect on his turbulent thoughts.

Pulling himself up on the railing, Devin held his hands above his head. Passengers cried out for him to stop and rethink his course of action.

Then, slowly, Devin opened his hands and stepped down from the railings. Passer-bys breathed as a sigh of relief as Devin turned, and walked away, hearing his wedding ring fall into the water with a plop.
