Fear shot through Anetta's spine like fire because she knew that if she did
not act soon it would be too late. Her children were dying, no they were
being murdered by an entity who held neither name nor face to her eyes. The
entity who slaughtered so many of her loved ones she began to loose track
of who was left. She heard a rustle in front of the other side of the door
and knew without a doubt what it was. The thing was trying to lure them
out, Anetta was not so easily deceived.
In 150 years of life she had learned the ways of the enemy and was
not going to fall for such a simple trick. She had two of her children with
her the youngest of 17. The first was Lina, blessed with a brilliant mind
but cursed to three feet tall at ten years old, The second was Joseph. At
20 years old he stood a towering mass of muscle, however as with all her
children his gift came at a cost. He was not very bright and was often slow
in certain matters. He held a strong sense of honor and justice, much like
his father.
He held steadfast with his sword in hand ready to attack any unwanted
intrusion from the door that really was the only thing between them and
death itself. They knew with certainty that it wouldn't be long now. As if
to assure them of the reality of their insecurity a voice came from the
other side of the door. It was somehow familiar but not genuine "mother"
they all instantly knew who the voice was "mother let me in" Lina's eyes
were bulging and fixated on the door "It's her" she said ecstatically "its
Millie, it has to be her! We have to let her in, we have to!" Lina began to
rise from her mothers lap and head for the door. Anetta stopped her "No! We
cannot open that door! Not for any one do you understand?"
Jason looked at his mother with the same look as Lina had "well we
cant just leave here out there!" his heart was racing, she knew but she
could not believe the voice outside of the door was her oldest daughter. So
she screamed in her loudest voice so loud that the children covered their
ears " No this door will not open!". Then the voice changed from that of
their loving daughter to something else, something dark and evil. She was
right and because of that she wept, though it said very little its
intentions were clear. " kill, kill, kill you all!" it said with a loud
shriek that sent chills through their hearts and souls.
Joseph looked back at the door, furious at the way the creature had
deceived them. " It was just a trap, a stupid trap! Darn him, that thing!"
Anetta and Lina both looked up at him, he was their only defense against
well whatever it was. She tried to assure him of victory "you can defeat
it" she said trying to boost his confidence but it was too late. " No I
can't" apparently the reality of the situation had already taken its toll
on him. He attempted to relax taking deep breaths in and out, closing his
eyes and relaxing his mind. When he finally opened his eyes after several
moments he spoke. " But I wont let it have me easy. I'll fight to the death
if I must" he said with finality. They all knew, without words that there
was no way he would do anything short of just that.
