Cherry Blossoms In The Winter

By: Chi Yagami

Chapter Six - A Christmas Gift

“What else do we need to add to the brew?”

Cece looked in the book. A cauldron lay bubbling near a chipped tombstone. The antidote was nearly ready.

“I believe that’s all. Now we have to wait a while… Come here, I want to show you something.”

Will followed her to a small grave. She pointed to the tombstone; it read Cecilia Chamberlain 1889-1903. Will sighed.

“They never found my body. Ms. Von-Trapp had everyone else buried, though.”

As soon as the potion was ready, they snuck back up to the mansion and into the kitchen. Will stood guard while Cece poured the potion into the pot of soup. Then they went and grabbed seats at the table.

“My friends,” Ms. Von-Trapp began, “we are gathered here tonight to welcome the Baluyot family into our petite town. It is custom for everyone to eat their soup, even the little infants. Now, EAT!”

Everyone ate the soup, including Will and Cece. Suddenly, a white light appeared from the ceiling. Everyone turned a pearly-white, and gained halos and wings. He saw Ms. Von-Trapp and her servants get swallowed up in a mountain of fire. His parents regained their color, and his sister started jumping up and down. Will looked to say good-bye to Cece. He spotted her in a corner, watching all of the others fly up to Heaven, and he noticed she lacked wings and a golden ring.

“What’s wrong?”

“I don’t know,” she sobbed. “I’m still a ghost!”

“Has your body been laid to rest?” asked an old cherub.

“Yes…”

“No!” cried Will. “When I went into the attic, I saw blood stains on the floor! Your body’s still up there!”

He raced up to his room, up the stairs, and into the attic. He found the bloodstain, and looked around for a body. He saw a gloved hand lying on the floor behind a trunk. He peered around and saw Cece’s corpse. He picked it up and shivered: it was ice cold and rotted.

He ran back downstairs, got Cece, and they ran outside into the graveyard. Will set her body down, and they dug up a grave.

“You weren’t buried very deep.”

He placed the body in the earth and replaced the dirt. He watched sadlyas his friend floated up to heaven.

“Wait,” he called. She came back down.

He hugged her as best as she could and muttered good-bye.

“Here, your family deserves this.”

Cece handed him a check.

“That should cover all of the financial losses you’ve had.” And with that, she was gone.

As they drove out of town the next morning, Will looked back to see the buildings disappear. Had it been a dream?

“Well, Christmas is going to be different this year,” his mother mused. "I suppose we'll be staying at a hotel..."

On Christmas morning, Will got a lot of great gifts. As he was cleaning up the trash, he noticed a small white box with a feather taped to it. It was addressed to him, and he took the feather off it felt like silk. He opened the box and discovered a locket, much to his surprise. He opened it and gasped. On one side, there was a picture of Cece and her parents. On the other side, there was a picture of Will and his parents. He smiled, and it wasn’t because it was Christmas or the fact that he had proof that Heaven existed, but because he knew that somewhere above, someone was watching him.
okay, so a corny ending yeah... not too enthusiastic about it myself, but for some reason I liked it back then...
