Rachel was in the elevator, waiting to get up to her room, when she
suddenly wondered why she never seemed to enjoy herself during elevator
rides.
It was as if something large and heavy had just hit her. She stared at
the buttons on the wall, inspiration abruptly coming to her. Why had she
never thought of this before? She wondered, a bit TOO gleefully.
On that day, there was only one other person in the elevator. She
glanced over at him, and then tapped him on the shoulder, and then looked
away innocently.
The man stared at her, shocked. "Excuse me?" he asked, bewildered.
"Hmm?" She turned around, still feigning innocence. "Is something
wrong?"
"You tapped me on the shoulder," he said, shifting his briefcase to
his other hand.
"Um... no I didn't," Rachel said, raising an eyebrow, as if
questioning the man's mental health.
He hastily got off on the next floor.
On her way down (Rachel was positively brimming with ideas) there was
a family in the elevator with her- a mom and two kids. Rachel glanced at
them, and then pressed a button.
"OUCH!" She gasped, jumping back the moment her finger touched the
button. "JEEZ! THAT HURT!"
"Mommy!" One of the little kids tugged on his mother's shirt, "the
button hurt the girl!"
She chuckled manically in her head, and then reached out to press
another button. "Ouch! It shocked me!"
She continued pressing buttons and 'getting shocked', until they
reached the main floor, and the mother hurriedly ushered her children out
of the elevator.
Rachel couldn't stop herself from laughing.
On her return trip, Rachel held open the doors, letting the other
passengers get in, looking around the lobby with worry.
"Could you please close the door?" A man in the back asked irritably.
"I'm sorry," she said, looking sad, "I'm waiting for my friend. She
should be here in a moment. Ah!" Rachel widened her eyes, and smiled. "Hi
Jenny! How are you?" She let the doors closed, and then turned to the other
people, all who were giving her VERY strange looks. "This is Jenny. See,
I told you that she'd come!"
The next day, Rachel casually dropped a pen on the floor of the
elevator, and yawned, feigning boredom.
The lady next door looked at her for a few seconds, and then bent to
pick up the pen.
"THAT'S MINE!" Rachel screamed at the top of her lungs, lunging onto
the floor of the elevator and hunching protectively over the pen.
"MIIIINE!"
Rachel unwrapped the disposable camera that she had just bought, and
looked around at the three other people in the elevator. "Hi!" She said
brightly, holding up her camera. "Can you all stand over in that corner? I
REALLY want your pictures!"
"What?!" One of the women asked, shocked. "Whatever for?"
"Well, I want to cherish this moment forever, don't I? I'm gonna miss
you guys all so much! Please? Please?" Rachel asked, desperately looking
around at them.
A bit hesitantly, they moved together, and Rachel smiled. "Alright!
Say cheese!"
It wasn't surprising that no one did.
Rachel couldn't help herself. She was having more fun than she ever had in an elevator before, and she still had so many plans! She laughed to herself on the third day as she rode down, swatting invisible mosquitoes, and screaming at the imaginary bugs at the top of her lungs.
On the way up, she stood quietly in a corner, before she abruptly
began smacking her forehead and muttering, "Shut UP in there! Shut up! Be
quiet all of you! BE QUIET!" She grimaced painfully, and looked
apologetically at the other girl in the elevator. "They're just so LOUD,"
she explained.
The girl gaped at her, and hurriedly pressed the button for the
nearest level- practically running out of the elevator.
That evening, her mother decided to take Rachel and her brother out to
eat. Rachel, always plotting, had pre-warned her brother, so he wasn't
surprised when she stood motionless, staring at the only other passenger in
the elevator.
Suddenly, her face became a mask of horror, and she back away,
pointing. "You're one of THEM!"
"Rachel!" Her mother gasped, surprised.
Rachel glared at the other passenger, her brother doing the same.
Rachel ran to the elevator as she noticed people entering it, and she quickly closed the door before her mother could make it in on this ride. She stood in front of the door, and as each person pressed a button, she made large, quite enthusiastic explosion noises.
It wasn't until Rachel stood there, staring at someone, smiling silently before explaining about her new pair of socks, that she was banned from the elevator for a month.
Ah well. It had been fun while it had lasted!
