Dedication: To anyone who has ever been in love.
January 2,2004
I think I am in love. Seriously. I know i'm only 14 years old, but I think I have found 'the one'. It sounds cliche and all, but I know that there is something special about Paul. He's intelligent, witty, hilarious, and he has these eyes. His eyes are this dark, deep mysterious brown eyes that just....intrance me. We're going to go to Fredrick's Diner tomorrow for a .....date? No not a date, just a brunch. He's 15, and that intimidates me some, and it's a good thing my mom doesn't know-she thinks he's my age-he looks 15 though. She would skin me alive. Oh, did I mention that Paul has connections? I mean, big time connections. His father is the CEO of Marshall Records (that big record label) and he has signed a lot of famous people (Pristina, Dustin Fenderlake ect) and Paul gets to meet them and tons of other stars! Doesn't that rock?
~Katlyn~
P.S. Happy Belated New Years!
Katlyn Porter logged off of the computer and sighed. Her life was going great, (at this she knocked on the wooden desk) and it seemed perfect, too perfect. At this, she started dwelling on the past.
Her father, Ted had walked out on her mother who was pregnant with Katlyn 14 years ago. She has had the chance to talk to him, but she refuses. "After what he did to my mother, I will never forgive him." Katlyn's mother was forced to raise infant Katlyn and her three year old son Benjamin alone-until Martha came. Martha was new in the town (and newly widowed) and saw the desperate mother and her two children at the grocery store and asked her if she needed help, that she wouldn't bite. The mother was reluctant at first, but then gratefully accepted the woman's offer. The woman came everyday (for free) and helped with the two kids-she was like a second mother-and a blessing in disguise. But when Katlyn was 9 and Benjamin 12, a tragedy happened. Martha was killed in an automobile accident en route to the Porter's. Everyone was devastated. Every month, the family goes to her gravesite and changes the flowers and gets out the weed wacker and clean up the grave. No one could replace her, and the children were older, so they just didn't get anyone else. But she met Paul at a party that one of her friends through, and he was also a blessing in disguise.
Katlyn's childhood was basically like a contemporary version of Betty Smith's "A Tree Grows In Brooklyn" but minus a couple things-the drunk father, the younger brother and some other small things. Even though she did get a delicious meal everyday (compliments of Mrs. Martha Edwards) she was a tiny thing and all of the women in the town seemed to tell her she was too skinny and needed to eat more. Katlyn was always quiet and did what everyone told her (but she didn't want to of course). She was very intelligent though, and she had a passion for writing (instead of reading-like Francie). She loved to go to school, even though she was teased a lot because she didn't have expensive clothes and shoes and everything else. She never really had any friends, but as she grew older, she slowly opened up. She wasn't a social butterfly, but she had several mutual friends. Her brother on the other hand, was very popular and had lots of friends and had had a couple girlfriends in his life. Secretly, Katlyn was jealous-but she had too much pride to tell anyone.
It was 11:30, so Katlyn went to sleep right when she layed her head on the pillow. Her alarm was set for 9:15 so when it went off, she slammed her hand on it and groaned. Then she remembered what was to happen that day, so she smiled and got ready by 9:45. She was dressed in her favorite worn in jeans and a pink marilyn top and her coat. It was pretty cold, so she wore her scarf too. And her notebook and purple pen that she always took with her. By 9:50, she told her mom bye and started her walk to Fredrick's Diner. It took only 3 minutes to get there, so when she got there, she still had seven minutes. So she got a booth in the front and sat down, just writing random stuff. "Hey there" a familiar voice said. Katlyn looked up and grinned. "Hey" she said. Paul smiled his blinding smile, and his brown eyes lit up. He tilted his head slightly to move his shaggy brown hair which made Katlyn say "When was the last time you cut your hair, youngin?" She called him a youngin because he was convinced that Katlyn was a thirty year old trapped in a fourteen year old girl's body. Paul laughed. "I'm going for the grunge look". The waitress was Shannon, who was one of Paul's ex girlfriends who still had the hots for him.
"Hey Paul, how have you been doin'?" she said, smacking her gum.
"Good" he said.
"I miss you Paul" "
I do believe, Shannon," he said, looking at her name tag "that this is a resturant and not a socialite club. Am I a correct?" he asked. Shannon scowled, glancing at Katlyn. "Whatever. What do you want?" The pair ordered and Shannon stomped away.
Katlyn almost howled with laughter. "Oh my gosh that was hilarious!" she said, gasping for air. She put her head on the table and started giggled, and started to laugh harder when Paul started to chuckle. "Okay, I'm alright" she said, her face red. She exhaled some and then she was back to normal. "So, have you met any more fantastic celebrities in the past couple weeks?" Katlyn asked.
"Well, a week ago, I met Pristina. She was a character."
"A character?" Katlyn inquired.
"Yes, she she quiet of a diva. She wouldn't drink the bottled water we got for her cold, she wanted it at room temperature, and it had to be Evian. And also, she had me sanitize my hands with her sanitizer before I shook her hand."
Katlyn sighed. "People these days, so high matinance." Paul nodded.
Two plates plopped in front of the two, and two drinks and Shannon walked off in a huff. The two ate slowly, taking their time, talking and laughing and when they finished, it was almost 12:00. "Oh my gosh, my mom is going to kill me! I was supposed to be home at 11:30!" "Your mom is not going to kill you, okay? It's only 30 minutes later, she'll live."
Katlyn waved her hand in the air. "Check!" she yelled.
Shannon rolled her eyes and said "Look on the table, blondie". Katlyn pulled out her purse and was about to pull her money, but when she looked up, Paul had put the tip on the table and was up paying. She scrambled up there to him and said
"Thank you so much Paul, I had a wonderful time! I have to go, bye!" she said, walking towards the door.
"Wait, Katlyn. Listen, c'mon with me. Let's go to the park. Your mom won't care, she trusts me right? We'll just go there and be back there at 1. It's okay."
"NO!" Katlyn said, irritatingly brushing a strand of blonde hair out of her eyes.
"Katlyn, you need to loosen up, doll. It's okay, I'll go to your house and explain. Your mother can kill me if she wants to, okay?" A sudden rebellious urge creeped up Katlyn's spine and and shivered.
"Okay" she said, without hesitation. Paul grinned and put his arm around Katlyn. She smiled and the two walked off into the bright outside. Katlyn blinked.
"Yeah, the bright light of rebelion has shone on you." Paul said, grinning again. Katlyn laughed.
"That is so corny" she said, even though in her heart, she knew it was true.
