A Husband's Wish
There once was a man who had a beautiful wife. They were happy
together and were always smiling when in each other's company. One day the
man looked at his lovely wife and said, "I wish you could stay this way,
this beautiful and young, forever."
Well, far away a genie heard the man. He could feel the love that
drove the man's words. The genie was intrigued by this and decided to grant
the man his wish.
As the years went by, the man's wife never changed. Her hair never
grew, nor ever got cut. Her face stayed young and joyful. She stayed
exactly the way she was when the man made his wish. Many people thought it
queer that the woman never changed, but no one ever mentioned it.
Decades flew by and the man grew old and crippled. He still loved his
beautiful wife and she loved him. The man died after a short while, but his
wife lived on. The village where she lived thought that she had killed the
man and accused her of witchcraft. Frightened the young woman fled, never
to be seen by the village again.
Many more years passed by, yet the exquisite woman stayed young. She
missed her husband dearly and realized she would not grow old, die and live
with him again in heaven. She bought a knife that night and went to an
abandoned park. She stuck the knife into her breast and watch the crimson
blood seep from the wound. She died, and the next day a young police
officer found her near the river. He ran to her to see if she were still
alive. Her skin was cold and pale, like that of a porcelain doll. The
officer knew she was dead and rushed to find a priest.
There was a small funeral for her. Everyone who went were at awe about
the fact that she was still young and fair. She was then buried.
Centuries later, some grave-thieves dug her up and were surprised not
to find a skeleton, but a beautiful young woman. They thought of zombies
and vampires, and ran away in fear.
Far away, the ghost of the man finally found the genie who granted his
wish. "Why did you grant my wish?" asked the man.
"Because," said the genie, "you loved her so much exactly the way she
was, and I didn't want Time to spoil that. It is rare to see that kind of
love."
The man thought for a moment. "Yes, I did love her the way she was,
but I was that way too. I loved the fact that this beautiful girl loved me,
but then I grew old and she looked to me like a child would a grandfather.
I didn't want that." Said the man.
"Then be careful what you wish for." The genie said, and flew away.
The End
