Kiari walked quietly down the hall. She feared to make a noise;
Mistress Kayla and Master Jonathan would wake to a pin dropping. Their
Parents Lord and Lady O'Connell would lock her the dungeons of the palace
if she were to wake their children. At the end of the day was the choosing
of the guards if she were in the dungeon there would be no chance of her
gaining freedom for herself and her younger siblings.
Kiari finally reached the chamber she shared with her brother and
sister. At this time both of them should have been eating breakfast
quietly. She looked around and only saw Kit, her sister but couldn't find
her brother, Rae, "Kit, where's Rae," Kiari asked.
"In the castle Dungeons. Miss and Master got mad at him. If someone
doesn't claim him by midnight he'll be executed," Kit replied as tears
streamed down her face.
"Don't worry Kit, I'll go claim him," Kiari replied grabbing a lantern and
a map.
"Kiari, WAIT! What about the choosing of the guards," Kit asked, if
Kiari was chosen all three might be freed. If Kiari didn't win then things
would continue as usual and now if she didn't get chosen Rae would die.
"You're right Kit I have to try," Kiari answered plopping down onto
her bed. Kit left to do her chores and two kittens walked in. The were
carrying a golden Fife. Kiari took the fife from them and something came
over her and she started to play a beautiful song. She hadn't realized how
long she was playing until Kit came in shouting,
"Kiari, Kiari, the choosing is about to begin," Kit exclaimed dragging
her older sister towards the field the competition took place.
During the competition Kiari was amazed at how much her skills had
increased since last night. Where she barely ever made a bull's-eye
before she made three in a row, where she usually had great trouble
defeating an opponent she defeated 7 quickly. Kiari was confused as to how
a day spent playing a Fife could do this. When the prince approached her
she had to ask the burning question that had been racing through her mind
since she set the fife down. "Will Rae be set free?"
"If you give your place up as a guard," the prince replied looking at
the ground.
"I know, Logan, but he is my younger brother," Kiari replied looking
at her half-brother, the prince.
"So am I," The Prince replied furiously.
"He's younger, and besides there's always next that I could win,"
Kiari answered him.
"Okay, I'll go tell Father your decision, he loves you, Kiari, did
you know that," the prince asked his half-sister.
"No, see you next year Logan," She said hugging her brother as she
left to collect Rae.
"Same to you Kiari," the prince said to her retreating back.
Everything seemed to return to the way it was before that years the
choosing of the guards. Lord and Lady O'Connell and their children didn't
understand why she gave up freedom for her brothers life, they probably
never will. One thing did change though; every night during sunset all of
the kingdom could here Kiari playing her fife, to prepare for next years
competition. Maybe next year she'll win again.
