Chapter 1

All around her, there were people running to the gate their flight was leaving from, scared that they might miss the flight. There were people rushing to make lines to finally board that flight they had been waiting forever to catch. People buying magazines, and what other types of goodies they thought might help them stay awake during the duration of their flight.
In the mist of that entire discomposureness, 22-year-old Brooklyn stood in front of the pay phone all by herself. She picked up the phone, and nervously began dialing some numbers. She heard the phone ringing. Every unanswered ring felt like an eternity she had to cope with, until finally, a familiar voice answered the phone.
"Hello?" said the voice on the other line of the phone. "Hi sweetie!" She said, with the sides of her mouth quickly forming a smile. "Hi honey! Are you scared?" Matthew asked. "No silly. A little nervous though, but never scared." Brooklyn responded. "So, are you ready?" Brooklyn continued. "My flight arrives in Tokyo at almost 5 pm from gate 34." Matthew giggled and said, "I know that honey. I have it all written down. Don't worry." Brooklyn sighed and said "Sweetie, I really can't wait to feel your luscious skin touch mine." She reminded Matthew of such a wonderful delight they were about to encounter soon enough. "Are you going to be looking sexy for me in your uniform?" Brooklyn asked. "You know it!" Matthew said with excitement. "I can't wait." She said, "but I am going to let you go so I can buy a couple of magazines. You just make sure you look cute when I first see you." She giggled. "You make sure you do the same thing." Matthew joked. "Alright! I will talk to you later, or shall I say, I will see you later." She giggled. "I'll see you later honey." Matthew said, as he hung up the phone.
Brooklyn and Matthew never had the opportunity to see each other face to face yet. They had met through the Internet a little over a year ago. That first time they chatted, she thought she could never fall for a guy like the one she was talking to. She found him to be self- absorbed, and a little bit of an asshole. She was surprised how her first impression feelings disintegrated as she got to know him progressively. One day, their friendship took a turn for the better, it decided it wanted to grow into something more, a loving relationship.
After so many failed attempts of trying to finally meet each other when Matthew was stationed in the United States, this time it was finally going to happen. Brooklyn and Matthew decided that they could not wait any longer, so when summer came, Brooklyn was to fly to Japan, the place where Matthew had been stationed at for the last three months.
Brooklyn serenely hung up the telephone, and let out a sigh of a woman in love. She began taking slow, yet deep breathes to try to calm her nerves. She did not want her legs to wobble as soon as she begins to walk to the nearest store.
She wandered through the first store that came into sight. It was an artsy kind of store. Beautiful craftsmanship of Californian souvenirs covered most of the stores capacity. The rest of the available space was filled with cheap novelty items, munchies and books and magazines.
Her eyes grew bigger as she began realizing the stores huge variety of keepsakes, one of those she wanted to purchase so badly as a reminder of this unique opportunity she was about to experience. She never could decide which one would be a better use of her money though. She kept them both at hand as she breezed through some of the magazines and books.
At the end of her journey through the store, being an avid postcard collector, she ended up buying a couple of postcards, and a few magazines for her over sears journey.
She did not feel the need to buy some useless souvenir. She actually detested the idea of how people go nuts buying some worthless keepsake just to buy it. Just to be able to say, "Look! I was at." If it were something that actually worked, like a mug that also doubled as a memento, or some coasters. But, buying a snow globe just because it had some kind of evidence of the fact that you were actually there, or some other crappy devices was just feeding your money to the pipes.
Leaving the store after she paid for her purchases, she walked to the lounge just outside her gate, found a seat that seemed quiet, and sat down. She set her carry on bag on top of the magazines she had put on the chair next to her, as if she were saving that seat for someone special, even though she knew he was in Japan waiting patiently for her arrival.
Brooklyn rested her head on the back of the seat, and looked up to observe the lights that were above her. She began counting the squares that were above her, made out of tiles in the ceiling. She was able to get to 492 when her eyes began to get weary. She closed them as if she were to be transported back in time. Thoughts from her past slowly invaded her brain.
She could not believe all this started out on a rainy evening in the middle of April. The rain pounded hard against the glass windows that sat next to the computer. The rage of the thunder sounded loudly she thought that her friends who were on vacation in Mexico were able to hear it's furious yell. The lightning seemed to illuminate behind the dark clouds, making it seem like the sun had come out for that quick second. The rain thought that the thunder and lightning would discourage Brooklyn of going online, but the rain was dead wrong. She waited patiently as her computer would be kind enough to take her to another world in its own.
The thunder just outside the window was getting rambunctious, as if it were testing Brooklyn. As one sound of the booming would stop, one would simultaneously take over, as if they had planned it like that way in advance. She knew she could not log off. On a rainy day just like that one, she knew that what she wanted was someone to cuddle with, and since she did not have anybody cuddleworthy; she had to settle for the companionship of her trusted computer, and the kind words of online friends of whom she had never met before. She had also just begun a conversation with a 22-year-old Navy corpsman, and being 21 at the time, obviously the age each other had at the moment was perfect. The thought of stepping away from that bewildering exchange of words just seemed redoubtable to her.
That was the night she met Matthew, the guy who she craved, the guy who would have that ability to take her heart soaring through the tunnels of love. The guy who she was able and capable of telling her secretest secret too. The guy who she learned quickly to trust, with all her might and soul. He had the ability to make everything inside her feel as if it were meant to happen that way. She had her doubts about those premature feelings, but she never let that bother her during their conversations. She figured the truth of her feelings would reveal itself in due time.
During the following months, conversations, like their primogenital conversation were random yet unfailing.
As their present slowly became a part of their past, they started sharing secrets of their life, secrets they kept hidden in their hearts, under lock and key. Those secrets that they would have never imagined of sharing with another living human being. Once those secrets began to gradually expose themselves, they knew in their hearts what ultimately would happen.
Months later, they quickly began to clear all doubts pertaining to the fact if they were right for each other or not. They discovered that they did have a lot of similarities between them. They were both the oldest of the family. He had a younger brother, while coincidently she had a younger sister. They both listened to the same type of music, basically the kind that wouldn't give them a headache. They caught themselves laughing at the same silly jokes. They realized that the both had issues of trusting other people, particularly to the opposite sex. As time went by, they began to conquer that fear with each other. Opening up to one another with their past and their daytime drama of some particular day. And most importantly, got along great.
They also exposed each other's past relationships. Something both of them had always been frightened of doing to a person who might have the capabilities in being a potential partner. Being able to do that brought each other's heart closer together.
Brooklyn's experience in this amusing game of love consisted of a five-month relationship with a guy named Christian, and a one-year relationship with a guy who she thought was her best friend. He inevitably broke her heart when he realized he could not be in a relationship with a girl like her, and that is all he said, leaving her to figure out what he was trying to say. "A girl like her." Had been the thought that had been haunting her brain relentlessly ever since.
Matthew's situation was a little different though, but he had just as little experience as she did.
Matthew had been introduced to the dating scene when he was 18. He had not been interested in dating before that. He was too busy dealing with high school stuff: grades, sports, after school clubs and the like. He figured he would find a girlfriend when time figured it was time for him to have one. Four years later, his dating resume was only composed by one girl; Kendra White, which lasted two years.
Their relationship ended when Kendra lost her 6-year battle to cancer. He was terrified of losing the next female who would be the following "love of his life", because he had been traumatized with the event of seeing Kendra's lifeless body lying in the coffin, he swore he would never love again.
A little before he met Brooklyn, his heart felt like it needed a change. He indeed wanted someone in his life, someone he can love and cherish. He missed having someone of whom he could confide in his very last secret with. He wanted someone. He was tired of that emptiness his heart had become so accustomed to feeling since Kendra's death.
He was about to lose all expectancy of actually meeting someone to whom he could relate with, when a couple of days later, some unexpected force allowed him to meet Brooklyn. He sensed from that day one, his friendship with a girl whom he only knew by from words on the computer screen, would sooner or later revolutionize his life for the better.
