Speak

You see my tears, you hear my mournful sobs,

and “deeply moved in spirit, troubled,”

you weep with me.

Invisible within my heart

your perfect eyes are bleeding silent tears,

your sorrow falls

and flows with mine,

our sorrow for the dead,

the living dead

entombed within

themselves.

Your heart is crying, screaming, bursting so much more than mine

to “take away the stone,” to lead them out,

out of the hell of death, into the light of life.

I cannot do it, Lord – you can:

A word from you alone can penetrate the grave.

Oh speak then! Speak! Oh speak, my Lord, oh speak

with the irresistible authority

of Life.

“When Jesus saw her weeping, … he was deeply moved in spirit and troubled. … Jesus wept. …”Take away the stone,” he said. … Jesus called in a loud voice, “Lazarus, come out!” The dead man came out, his hands and feet wrapped with strips of linen, and a cloth around his face. Jesus said to them, “Take off the grave clothes and let him go.” (John 11: 33-44 NIV)
