"One note: two human-language terms, "queen" and "tom," are routinely used to translate the Ailurin words sh'heib and sth'heib. "Female" and "male" don't properly translate these words, being much too sexually neutral. The Ailurin word ffeih is used for both neutered males and spayed females. -- DD (Diane Duane)"
Also ehhif is a human female or male. A human partner in other words. Houff is a dog. (The above is taken from Diane Diane's "The Book of Night with Moon." It is not made up by me. Thank you).
Familiar's: Adventures
By: Marina L. 7/24/04
It all started on Aug 1, 2013. Not my life exactly but the beginning
of my adventures with my ehhif. She was and still is a good friend and
partner to me, though she would say it was the other way around. Humph, not
likely.
Let's see where was I. Oh, yes I remember now. It was Sunday August
1st which happens to be a day of celebration in honor of Lughnassadh. It is
one of the four major Celtic fire festivals. Lughnassadh is celebrated in
honor of Lugh, the Celtic Sun God, by celebrating the first harvest and
returning it to earth. The Celts held the Four Fire festival days as
special nights for oracles, prophecy and requests.
"Get your butt off the coach and lets go" she yelled. Her voice making his ears twitch. He grumbled under his breath but got up. Not moving off the coach he first stretched his front paws. His fanny was up in the air as well as his long black furred tail. Claws out he kneaded the comfy coach. "What do you think your doing. I can hear you from the doorway. Stop ruining my upholstery and get moving" she raved once again.
Keep your pants on or whatever it is you are wearing today he told her in her mind. Her reply was simply a "Harrumph." Finishing his stretches he sat and began to groom himself. He was so not moving.
What did she expect, he was a cat. We don't do nothing unless its for our benefit he muttered to himself. "What was that.I heard you. Now get moving" his ehhif yelled. This was not new to her. Every morning she had to put up with this bullshit. Grumbling under her breath she silently waited for her familiar.
Being the only witch, Pagan that is, on Thunder Island was nothing to smile about. Every day new emergences came up. First it was the missing jewelry, then the eaten crops, after that the broken windows etc. "Jeez," she whispered then sighed tiredly.
Come on Familiar. We really have to go. Mrs. Darns is real insistent we go up to Valmant Castle, Rowena Ruby Star told her cat telepathically. At that his head came up rapidly. What, what. The Demon Castle. Are you out of your mind. He shuddered then sat back down and started licking himself again. No way. Not on your life will I be going up there. Rowena frowned at her familiars words. She crossed her arms over her chest and waited. She knew it would not be long now, not after that statement.
Finishing the last of his cat food Familiar swiveled his ear around listening. The whisperer was mad at him all right. Yelping he ran straight for his friend. Rowena saw the dark blur heading straight for her. She was barely in time to open her arms and catch him. He was scared she knew. Stroking his short black fur and kissing him on his cold black nose, she closed the door to her home called Avatar House, as everyone else on the island knew. As she walked farther and farther northeast she whispered calming words into his upturned ear. Eventually, he calmed.
"Hey Rowena.you going to that castle, yet" Jess Simpson called out as she passed him. "Yes, Jess on my way now" she replied with a stiff smile on her pale face. Shushing Familiar who was still in her arms, she picked up her pace. She should have known Mrs. Darns would talk. The lady was the gossip on Thunder Island anyway. Rowena was sure that on the main land, Nuette, there was no gossipy women in sight. But then again she never visited the main land. It was not possible due to the Lightning Pass separating the two land bodies from each other. Thus, there where no visitors from Nuette here, as well as from here there. Shrugging her slim shoulders Rowena turned her mind to other matters.
"Oh, Rowena dear. Do stop by that castle" Miss. Pratt called out. Rowena muttered to herself nodded her head and ran. It looked like a normal walk to the villagers but it wasn't. Tucked comfortably in her arms Familiar chuckled as more people told his mistress what she should do, being go to the only castle on their island. He sighed brokenly and began to lick his paws. Mind as well go clean to your doom then dirty as a sinner, he thought sadly.
