Chapter 1: The Meeting
Dana Summers has always been one of the guys. She’d always preferred little dinosaurs to Barbie Dolls and was way better at playing video games than applying make-up, which was why none of the girls in SDF High felt threatened whenever they saw her hanging out with two of the cutest guys in their class—Matthew Cooper and David Miller, like she was doing right now at the bench beside the staircase on the West Wing of the High School building. They all knew after all, that she’d been friends with them since they were kids, and although she was reasonably pretty, she had no intentions of keeping her two cute friends away from the third of the female population of their school who was after them. So they left her alone, but not David and Matthew.
“Hey David, Matt, hi Dana,” a girl with long blond hair greeted as she passed by their bench.
“Hey Michelle,” David greeted.
Dana and Matt just waved.
The girl flashed David a smile before going on her way.
“New girlfriend, David?” Matt asked his friend.
David shrugged. “Maybe. Soon. She’s been calling me all summer,” he explained.
Dana rolled her eyes. “And that’s enough reason for you to ask her out?”
“Hey, she’s the one calling me. She definitely wants me to ask her out,” he said.
“Yeah, besides, she’s cute,” Matt said, agreeing.
“Whatever,” Dana said dismissively and changed the topic. “Who have you got for first period?”
“Uh…” David started and opened his notebook to look at his new schedule. “Atkinson, why?”
“Yeah? I’ve got English with Mr. Watson,” Matt said.
“Great,” Dana muttered. “Mine’s Zalinski. I can’t believe how lucky I am,” she said sarcastically. “Chemistry’s the worst subject ever.”
“What are you talking about? Chemistry’s great. We get to blow things up in the lab,” David said.
“Yeah, maybe with other professors it’s great. But I heard Zalinski’s all formulas and paper work. Talk about boring,” she said.
“It can’t be that bad,” Matt commented and was about to say something when the first period bell rang, getting him and everyone else to instantly stop what they were doing and started heading for their classrooms as fast as they could, making some people bump into walls, doors, or other people, like Dana.
“Oh sorry,” a tall guy with brown hair and dark blue eyes said when he saw the girl in front of him rub her forehead.
“It’s fine,” she said, not looking up. She scanned the floor to look for the notebook she dropped after running into the guy. She found it beneath the now empty bench, and bent to pick it up.
But he got to it first. “Here,” he said, handing it to her.
She took it and looked up at him. “Thanks,” she said nonchalantly, and quickly disappeared into a corridor, like everyone else had, causing them all to miss what the new kid in town, Adam Wakefield, would call ‘his first good experience since moving to Florida’.
“Mr. Wakefield, I presume?”
Adam heard the teacher say as soon as he walked into first period.
Great, Adam sighed. It was his first day at a new school and he was late. At least it’s because I ran into a pretty girl, he thought and decided that being late was a small price to pay for the earlier incident by the stairs. “Yes sir,” he said to the man standing at the aisle, his English professor, Mr. Watson, he ‘presumed’.
“Well, don’t make yourself anymore of a bother and sit somewhere,” he said. “I understand you’re new here but that’s no excuse for being late, got that?”
“Yes sir,” he said, nodding his head and went straight for the only empty seat in the room near the back. It was between some guy doodling and the wall. He slumped in his seat and sighed loudly.
“Relax buddy,” the guy next to him said without looking up. “First days are always the worst.”
“I guess,” he said, shrugging.
“Why were you late anyway?” the guy asked.
“Got lost.”
The guy chuckled. “Can’t say I blame you. All the new kids get lost in here. I still do sometimes,” he admitted, then held out his hand. “I’m Matt Cooper, by the way.”
He shook it. “Adam Wakefield,” he said. Then turned to him, thinking he could help. “I actually didn’t get lost because it was hard to find my way,” he said. “I kinda got distracted by this girl.”
Matt raised his eyebrows. “You’ve already met someone?” he asked. “That’s fast. What’s her name?”
“I don’t know yet,” he replied. “I was hoping you could tell me.”
Matt smiled slyly. “Well, you’ve come to the right person,” he said. “Because if there’s anything I know about SDF High, it’s that the women are beautiful and their names are easy to remember.”
Adam chuckled. “Great, I’ll point to her when I see her.”
“So, did you see her again yet?” Matt asked Adam later that day at lunch.
“See who?” David asked. Adam had just met him then.
“He ran into a pretty girl this morning,” Matt explained. “Have you seen her again? Do you know her name yet?”
“What does she look like?” David asked. “That’ll at least narrow it down.”
“Well,” Adam started. “I don’t know her name yet—“
“Dana!” Matt suddenly said and waved to a girl with red hair.
The same girl Adam had bumped into before first period.
He froze. What was he doing waving her over? Was he psychic?
“Hey guys, sorry I’m late. Karen asked me to drop by the office before lunch,” Dana said as soon as she reached their table and put her tray down. She sat beside Matt, looked at Adam in front of her, then turned from Matt to David. “Is it just me or is there really another guy I’ve never seen before sitting here with us?”
“Oh right,” Matt said. “Dana this is Adam. Adam, Dana.”
She smiled and nodded at him. “Nice to meet you,” she said.
“Yeah,” was all Adam could say. He was still confused. Why was she sitting with them? Was either of the two her boyfriend?
“So Adam, what was the name of that girl you were telling us about?” David suddenly asked.
Uh-oh, Adam thought. What was he going to tell them now?
“Girl? What girl?” Dana asked, her eyes widening.
“Adam ran into a pretty girl this morning,” Matt said.
“Really? Well, what’s her name? Maybe we know her.” she said.
Adam forced a smile. Great, he thought. Just great.
Author's Note: Well, there goes for the first chapter. Hope you liked it. Oh, and you have time, please read my other story Between Romance & Comedy. It's already finished, and a lot shorter than this one eventually will be. Please don't forget to leave a review (for both stories, in case you read that one, too)! Thanks very much!
