Crowds swarmed
Cameras flashed
Everyone wanted a piece of her
Fans were screaming her name
She blew a kiss, and sent them into ecstasy
Poor little rich girl
She yearned for simple pleasures
Life used to bring
She had taken them all for granted
The delectable smell of roses
In the park, natural
Not the ones plucked, pruned and hand-delivered
To her dressing room
The beauty of a sunrise
Shared with a loved one sitting on the beach
Overlooking the city
Rather than through her trailer
The solitary silence deafening
Being able to do what she wished
Nothing to worry about
Save for having a blast
No omnipresent journalists
Always hungry for a scandal
Their livelihood depended on it
As did her career
Smiling at the flashes of the paparazzi
She remembered how she used to love
Pushing herself into the limelight
Always the centre of each photograph
The centre of attention
She outshone them all
How things have changed
She knew not the meaning of privacy
Now she thrilled in being able
To stroll down a street unrecognized
Carefree, not constantly looking over her shoulder
What was celebrity, after all? Celebrity was a washed-up business
A cage robbing you of your freedom
A magnifying glass that shows only your worst flaws
So the public could dissect with all the glee they could possibly get
Out of this sad pastime
Celebrity was a drug
Driving you slowly insane
Once you start you cannot look back
Obscurity was not an option
She had dreamt about fame for so long there was to be
No turning back
Endless autograph signing
Each smile strained even more
She was dying to get out
Of this vicious cycle
She was lost
Confused
She was so confused
Glitz and glamour
Was that not what she had always wanted
So why did she feel this way
Standing on the fabled red carpet
Living out her dreams?
