Author's Note: Yes, More on Terror about the war on terror. Is neither anti-war, or pro-war. Just some observations about the war.

***The war on terror is not quite an accurate name for what is happening right now. One definition of terrorism is to "Use of violence to induce fear." Does this mean that the war is not only against Arab countries (who have somehow been labeled the offenders) but also against any bully on an elementary school playground? Plus, isn't that just a new world for violence, as most violence does tend to induce fear?

A second, and more accurate definition of terrorism is to "Change a society through violence." Doesn't any war change the societies that are involved? And all wars are violent. Well, not all of them. But the important ones are. The American army is changing a society through violence. Does that make them terrorists? And if so, are we fighting a war against ourselves? It doesn't add up.

Another definition is "Violence targeted towards civilians." This isn't right either. If it is, Hiroshima was definitely an act of terrorism as well as an act of war. For those who do not know, a bomb was dropped on Hiroshima by Americans during the Second World War. (I cried when we learned about it in school. Bombs are scary.) Plus, that would definitely count as a weapon of mass destruction. But since that is not considered terrorism, it obviously isn't the kind of terrorism that our American troops are now seeking to eliminate.

What I feel to be the best definition is "Violence during a time when there is not war." (Big violence, not little violence. You know what I mean.) If this is the definition of terrorism being used, then the Sept. 11 attacks were definitely terrorism. But now, all terrorists are part of this 'War on Terror.' Therefore, since terrorism is an act of violence that is not during a war, anything they do is during a war against them, so they aren't terrorists anymore.

This is why I believe that the war on terror is not a good way to describe it. As Chomsky said, "Killing of innocent civilians is terrorism, not a war against it." And no, I don't know who Chomsky is either. I just read their quote.***

Author's note: Please do not think that I am siding with terrorists. I believe that what they did was wrong, these are just some observations about the definition of terrorism and how we aren't really fighting it. Reviews will be appreciated. Flames will be forwarded to hell, where they are useful.
