The Darkness in the Light

Drenched in mud; fallen in tears,

My soul, my heart, and all my fears.

The sweetest of salts; most savory sours,

My heart's blood puddles and gathers powers.

Fanatic for love; willing to want more,

My conspirers have heard it all before.

Stares of wonder; glimpses of fright,

My love entangled inside such blight.

Velvet soft; feels rough yet silky,

My blood on the mud; dyes it milky.

Take my aloft; let me float.

My life blooms, and doesn't gloat.

Compromise for safety; not hard a fight,

My Darkness, seen only in the Light.

Summary: Her? A princess. Him? An assassin. She learnt the rules of survival too early, and him, interpreted it the wrong way. He taught her how to love. She taught him the true meaning of heartbreak. If only he had been anyone else. Five years later, his path crosses with hers once more. This time, though, it could be fatal.

Prologue:

She'd always known she was special. She was born into the royal family on the night of a blue moon. The moment she opened her eyes, the moon glowed so brightly that it might as well have been day, and showered the palace with golden moon dust. They named her Kariden. It meant "Shadows of the moon" in ancient Mithran. Kariden lum Fuibale. The "lum" marked her as a royal, and Fuibale announced her as the daughter of King Matiles IV, also known as the princess of the Kingdom of Mistalin.

She was always loved. Always treasured. Nobles honored her, her parents spoilt her-as a royal tradition, they only had one child-and she'd never met anyone not nice to her. But it all felt so fake. She felt that there had to be a world outside of safety. Outside of home.

There was. And she was about to learn about it.

He's never known what a good life was. He thought the whole world was like this, the whole world lived in starvation and poverty. The day he changed his mind was the day he saw the Princess and her people on progress. They were beautiful. Especially her. The pink transparent veil, the pearls dangling from her midriff shirt, the jewel dangling off her head. That was the day he learnt about wealth. He learnt that people could be rich. He then found a way to be rich. It wasn't legal, but he was too young back then to know how wrong being an assassin is. Anyway, it worked for him.

Worked well.
