So Long and Goodnight
That night, it was simply impossible for Cassie to sleep, knowing that Travis was sleeping a few feet away from her---on her bed. Eyes wide open; she peered above her into the blackness of her room. The wind blew in from the open window by her bed and Cassie tugged the blanket tighter to her form. But it was just too cold, so Cassie threw the covers off of her and quietly walked over to where Travis lay sleeping. Leaning over ever-so carefully, she pulled the window closed.
“Cassie,” Travis whispered.
Jumping back and falling to the ground, Cassie screamed her pretty little head off. Travis thumped his head on the pillow and rolled over in bed laughing.
“You asshole!” Cassie angrily whispered as she pulled herself up. “Why would you do that?!” she hissed as she sat on his bed and slapped him.
Travis continued to laugh, his teeth clearly visible from the moonlight. He snaked his arms around her waist as his laughter died down but his smile still in place.
“I didn’t mean to,” he explained as he pulled her down to kiss her lightly. Her silky hair fell over her cheeks, the ends just barely touching Travis’s chin. She smiled against the kiss, pulling away a little.
“We need to sleep,” she said.
Travis lifted an eyebrow at her and she slapped him lightly for it. “Stop that,” she ordered. He chuckled and moved over in the bed. She took this as an invitation to lie beside him. She placed her head on his shoulder as he wrapped a protective arm around her. Soon, the two were sound asleep.
The next morning, Travis and Cassie were awoken by Aunt Karen and Jimmy arguing from downstairs.
Cassie sighed as she drummed her hands on Travis’s chest. “I don’t wanna go to school today,” she murmured against him.
He softly laughed, causing her to glance up at him. “Well, tell you what…I’ll pick you up after school and maybe we can go get something to eat…while you do your homework.”
Cassie lightly pounded her hand on his chest; this only caused him to laugh a little harder. She got up, slowly, and smiled down at Travis.
“I’m gonna go shower and get changed. You can use Caroline’s shower, because you’re taking me to school.”
Travis sighed and ran his hands over his eyes then to his hair. “If I have to,” he mumbled.
Cassie smiled thankfully and kissed him on the nose. He smiled as he watched her grab a few pieces of clothing and turn to move to the bathroom.
Once Cassie was finished with her shower, she went down stairs to the kitchen. She smiled at Travis as he read the newspaper and took a few sips of his coffee. His eyebrows were furrowed in deep concentration as he read the articles. Aunt Karen was at the stove, quietly preparing bacon, eggs and toast.
Cassie slipped into the chair next to Travis’ and pulled a section of the paper out from under him, this apparently startled him. He jumped in his seat and rubbed his face as he realized it was just Cassie.
Aunt Karen set down two plates of breakfast before the two and smiled. Cassie gave her a weary look and started at her breakfast.
“So Travis, what do you plan on doing today?” Aunt Karen asked.
Travis finished chewing his toast and said, “Probably sleep.”
Aunt Karen nodded, placing her hands in the pockets of her apron. Giving Cassie and Travis one last look of the ‘aww that’s they’re so adorable together’ face, she walked out of the kitchen yelling, “Have a good day at school, Cassie.”
“Mhmm,” mumbled Cassie.
Walking down the bustling hallway towards her locker, she caught Adam in front of the counselor’s office yet again. This time he was reading a book.
“Hey,” greeted Cassie.
Adam put the book on hold, slipping a finger between the pages and looked up at her. He smiled and said, “Hey.”
“What’d you do today? The bell didn’t even ring yet!” she said as she seated herself next to him.
Adam cleared his throat and sat up a little straighter. “I was smoking again, behind the gym.”
Cassie groaned. “Adam! Are you trying to get yourself kicked out?”
He shot her a look and picked his book up again, “Hey, whatever works, right?”
Cassie softly punched him, “Plus, smoking’s bad for you.”
“So I’ve heard,” he says, not looking up at her. Cassie sighs and stands clearly frustrated with this boy. “Leaving so soon?” Adam provokes.
Cassie rolls her eyes and turns away from him and walks down the hall and towards her locker. Adam glances at her as she walks away. He shifts his gaze from her to the counselor’s front door. Pulling himself up from the bench, he slips the book in his back pocket and ambles over to where she stands in front of her locker.
Leaning against a set of lockers, Adam crosses his arms and says, “So how’re you and what’s-his-face?”
Cassie bites her lower lip and says, “He has a name, you know.”
Adam rolls his eyes. “Really? How interesting!”
“Why’re you such a dickhead?!” Cassie shouts as she turns to face him.
“Why’re you screaming?!”
She slams her locker shut and murmurs, “Go to hell.”
“You’re awfully testy this morning,” Adam notes.
“You’re awfully irritating this morning.”
“Aw well that’s so sweet of you to say, Cass.”
“Why’re you like this?” she asks him, spinning around to face him.
Adam crosses his arms and says, “Like what?”
Cassie rolls her eyes at his immaturity. “Like this!” she shouts as she gesturers to the way he’s standing. She notes that his posture falters for a bit. Then he breaks and walks towards her.
“Why’re you with him?” he quietly asks her.
Stepping back a few feet away from Adam, she stares at him. “What are you talking about?”
His eyes flash a very cold embrace and he stands stronger. “I’m not repeating my question.”
“I don’t know what you’re talking about,” she tells him as she shifts her weight onto her foot.
“Do you like him?” Adam asks.
Taken aback, Cassie cries, “I don’t believe that’s any of your business!”
Adam cocks his head to the side. “You do, don’t you?”
Blinking furiously, Cassie says, “What about Tracie?”
Slipping his hands into his pockets he calmly replies, “What about her?” Cassie opens her mouth to say something, and then closes it. “What?” he asks, irritation slipping through his words. Turning, Cassie shakes her head. Adam follows after her. He grabs her arm and spins her around, pinning her against a set of lockers.
Kissing her square on the mouth, he places his hands on her hips. Shocked and scared, Cassie’s hands remain away from Adam’s god-like body. Pulling abruptly away from her, he shouts at her, “Tell me you didn’t feel anything!”
Cassie is on the verge of tears now. She pushes Adam away from her and shouts, “Tracie was right behind you!” And with that, Cassie runs down the hallway. Adam rubs his hands over his face, ignoring the irritating stares from kids passing by.
