Chapter 10 - Then and Now

(Set in the year 2004)

Alfie Fosston walked up to the old manor house and gazed at it in awe. It was amazing.

Alfie was there on a tour, he was interested in old architecture and also in mysteries. For this place was sure to have hundreds of secrets. Suddenly a movement caught his eye at one of the windows. He thought he saw a person there, but he figured it was just a trick of the light.

Later, during the tour, a girl was mentioned.

'Marie was a prisoner here. When she was 18, she met Hayden Fosston. He asked for her hand in marriage, but she was already promised to her captor's grandson, Hunter Creston. The young men were sent away on a challenge. Whoever returned first would have her as his wife. 7 months after they left, Marie gave birth to a baby boy. She named him Hayden, after her love. However, the child was born premature and in those days they didn't have the technology to look after him. He died aged 4 months. Marie still held out in the hope that Hayden would return, but he never did. She refused Hunter and vowed that her soul would never leave this house until her love returned to her.'

The guide's voice seemed to tail off in Alfie's mind. The figure at the window; it made sense. He remembered the way to the tower that they'd been shown and he followed it until he came to the window he'd seen her at.

'Marie? Are you here?' He whispered tentatively. He was suddenly cold. Through the open window he heard a breath, lighter than a summer breeze, murmur 'Thank you.'

And Alfie knew, in his heart, that Marie was at peace.
