I'm Sophia.

"Name: Sophia Aginme. Age: Seven. Appearance: Pale-skinned, waist- length black hair, gray eyes. Notes: Quiet; doesn't interact with others much. Voice is soft; almost inaudible. Stares a lot."

That was what was on my report.

I was never fully sure why I was here, but I think it had something do to with my mind. One of the girls at school said I made her see things. Another said she saw me playing with floating balls of light during recess. I admit to the light-balls, but not the mind stuff. I think that's what got me stuck in here, my light-balls.

Once, I saw my sister reading something. When she put the book down and got up to answer the phone, I grabbed it and read the back.

"If a person believes that they can see something strongly enough, they will see it. THE POWER OF BELIEF is a study on this and other incidents connected to the mind and its unique, strange, and sometimes deadly powers."

Am I one of those people? I've heard that some people go crazy because their mind gets messed up, but I don't think I'm one of them.

But what if I am? I don't want to be stuck in a place where people might hurt me!

I've been here for three months. I hate it here. The adults, there are twelve of them, watch over me and twenty-six other kids, all between the ages of six and twelve. There were actually twenty-seven kids when I first arrived, but one of them turned thirteen during my first month and was taken away. We didn't see him again, but the adults told us he was just in a different area where the teenagers were.

Maybe it's true. Maybe it isn't. I won't know until I'm thirteen. But I don't intend on staying here that long.

I hate everything about this place. The adults, or Watchers, as I dubbed them; the play area; the infirmary; the lunchroom; the dormitories; I even hate some of the other children. Especially Maria Ann.

Maria Ann was what books called Mary-Sues. Her report read: "Name: Maria Ann Denver. Age: Eight. Appearance: Fair-skinned, waist-length blonde hair, blue eyes. Notes: Gets along well with others. Loud."

I hated Mary-Sues and I hated her.

You wonder how I know the reports. Well, Watcher Dennis once left them on a table. Everyone else left them alone, but I read them. I like to read, and I don't think the other children can, which is probably why they left the reports alone.

I didn't really get along with anyone. I could stand them, but if they didn't bug me, I didn't bug them. Everyone went by that rules except Maria Ann. She had some sort of fire control, and was very spiteful. While she couldn't actually call fire yet, she would always spark at me, and once she set the hem of my dress on fire. A boy named Louis put it out by stomping on it, but I tried to run and my dress tore. Everyone laughed as I ran to my room.

We all had strange powers, me and all the other kids. Maria Ann was the only one who showed off her power, though; I didn't know what the others could do.

I never intended on staying longer than a year or two.
