Death Shrouds and Black Sheets

Death shrouds
Black sheets and all the symbols of
A black soul:
How we wish, anyway.
How we wish
We could be dark
And dead
And uncaring.

Death shrouds and black sheets,
Trying so hard to be truly false
Wishing all the while reality was fantasy
Dancing so eagerly our death waltz.

Wind ourselves in apathy and
Breathe deep of the scent for
Black roses are so rare.
Or they were.
And if only they were still,
Maybe they would mean something
And affect something
And change something.

Death shrouds and black sheets,
Trying so hard to be truly false
Wishing all the while reality was fantasy
Dancing so vigorously our death waltz.

Catch the sunlight
In your lovely shards
Of soul:
Soul of whatever color
Because I know
You can only change the shell
You can only change your skin.

Death shrouds and black sheets,
Trying so hard to be truly false
Wishing all the while fantasy was reality
Dancing unwittingly our death waltz.
