Legalize All Drugs

If you've read any of my recent work, you'll probably realize that I'd like to see marijuana legalized. This essay is about why all drugs should be legalized, although I'll address more individual drugs too.
If all illegal drugs were legalized, that itself, would reduce crime. It would no longer be a crime to sell, possess or ingest drugs. Some people argue that just using drugs would turn people into violent criminals. I'd have to disagree.
Making drugs legal, would most likely result in a reduction of cost. Most drugs are pretty cheap to make. They're expensive because they're illegal. If the price went down, would people be mugged, robbed and/or murdered for their money?
Your taxes would be lowered. The drug war costs billions of tax dollars every year. You're paying for new prisons, drug counselors, and police officers to fight the so-called drug crimes. Is this how you want to spend over 10 billion dollars every year?
Prohibition of drugs is not the solution for anything. I've heard lots of remarks about how silly the prohibition of alcohol was. History is repeating itself, again. Since the prohibition of alcohol ended, alcohol has actually become safer. The prohibition of alcohol actually increased the crime rate.
Federal and state prisons can no longer afford to keep violent criminals in prison. Instead we spend $315,000,000 a year on non-violent drug criminals. In fact, I have an example of the insanity that the war on drug causes.
It's 1997. Lamar Grey purchased one; yes one, pound of marijuana. He was fined $25,000 and served life in prison with no chance of parole. This crime didn't even take place in California, which has the three strikes law. Larry Singleton, on the other hand, raped a teenage girl, chopped off her arms and left her in the desert to die. He got the maximum sentence, repeat maximum sentence, of fourteen years. Even more appalling, he was paroled after eight years.
Is it just me, or is there a little bit of a problem? Oh, yes. Rape a girl, cut off her arms, and leave her to die. Then you'll get less than 15 years in prison. But don't buy a pound of marijuana. You'll get a life sentence. We know that by purchasing marijuana you weren't trying to harm anyone else, but that doesn't matter.
