Monsters....

Something that never existed
In a world that you never believed....

A dark room in a dark house--just another dark night. Another night to sleep through...or to try to live through.
Thunder rolls across the sky, the roar of an angry beast as it chases down the flicker of lightning that, for a brief moment, had shed some light into the darkness. For the briefest of seconds a scene is illuminated, a play taking place in the small, dark room. The only player, a young girl....
The small figure sits in the very center of her narrow bed, her knees drawn up to her chest and her tiny arms wrapped about her legs as if hoping to offer some feeble protection from the darkness around her. Her head is buried carefully in her knees as though she doesn't want to see, but it doesn't matter--she'd never be able to see through the darkness anyway.
Every tiny sound draws the girl's attention, but none of them are any more than the normal sounds of a sleeping household--at least, this is what she tries to tell herself. But childhood is a dangerous time. Nowhere is safe when nighttime falls--when darkness reigns.
They say that it isn't the darkness that's dangerous...
The young girl knows that it's true. It's not the darkness...it's what hides within it.
Night is when the monsters come out.

Something that always existed
In a world that you never understood....

Another place, another story.
A young woman walks quickly through the wet streets, her purse clutched in a death grip to her chest as she eyes the roads around her with distrust. She hates walking at night, but sometimes it's simply unavoidable. A distant rumble reminds her that a storm is approaching and she hurries her pace even more, hoping to beat the rain.
Dark alleys loom on her left, an empty street on the right. It's the alley-ways that bother her, the darkness and shifting shadows that draw her attention time and time again. Passing the dark openings she squints into the darkness; if there's anything there to see, she can't make it out. Here, at night, the darkness is supreme--even the dim light of the street lights can't penetrate the shadows.
The woman nearly jumps at a nearby sound--just a stray cat scrounging for some food. But this is a bad part of town and she knows it. Muggings, rapes, murders. The darkness hides many things, none of which the young woman is eager to encounter.
A bad part of town--especially at night.
Night is when the monsters come out.
