Shattered Hearts
She entered the hallway at her school. While walking, she noticed her
best friend, Alysha, talking to her boyfriend, Josh. Alysha and Josh had
been going out for about three weeks now.
Karen decided not to bother them and walked on. She knew that Alysha
would eventually have to come get her books, and since their lockers were
right beside each other, she knew she would get a chance to talk to her
best friend before their first class.
Karen opened her locker. Like any teenage girl with big crush, she
had pictures of her guy up in her locker. Kael Roberts. "What a hottie,"
she thought. These pictures came from his band practices that he would let
people come watch. He played the keyboard and sang for the band One Way
Exit. The other members were Zac, Lance, and Alex. Zac was on guitar, Lance
on bass, and Alex on the drums. But Karen was not looking at them. Oh no,
her attention was focused on Kael.
She took out her hairbrush and began to brush her short, dark brown
hair, while looking at herself in her little mirror. She had a gorgeous
smile and green eyes.
"I keep telling you to take those pictures down before he walks by
and sees them." It was Alysha. She had finished talking with Josh. She was
a little shorter than Karen, with short, light brown hair.
"Good morning to you, too," Karen replied.
"Well, I'm just saying. If I saw a locker with a bunch of pictures of
me up in it, I'd get kinda scared."
"He would be flattered," she said defensivly, knowing that she would
lose this fight, "And besides, there are plenty of other people in the
pictures that he wouldn't even notice."
"Dude, he's my cousin. I know what he would think. We like grew up
together."
"Okay, fine. But I am leaving the one taped in my Algebra II book."
That one was by far her favorite. He was the only one in it. He was sitting
at his band's upright piano that had a bumper stickers taped to it, playing
and singing into a microphone that was held up by a stand on the piano. His
dark hair hung over the top of his face and his right foot was lifted onto
a pedal. He wore a black Story of the Year shirt, dark blue jeans, and his
black converse.
"Dude, close your locker!" Alysha said suddenly.
"Why?" Karen asked.
"He's walking down here!" she whispered harshly. He was wearing his
Brand New shirt this time and as always, dark jeans and converse. His hair
was pushed to the side.
Right as Kael walked up to them, Karen slammed her locker shut.
"Hey, y'all. What's up? You aren't hiding anything in there, Karen,
are you?" he asked, smiling.
"Of course not," she replied in her kidding matter-of-factly voice.
"You sure? No drugs or alcohol?" he asked again.
"Nope, can't say that I have any," she replied, grinning. He smiled
back.
"Alysha, you and your family are eating at my house tonight," he told
her.
"I know," she replied.
"You might as well ride home with me. There is no point in you making
your 'rents come get you." They both had their license, but Kael already
got a car while Alysha's was soon to come.
"That would be nice, but I might have Karen spend the night tonight.
Do you have room in your car for another?"
"I always have room for another!" Kael replied. Karen was smiling her
gorgeous smile very brightly now. Lance and Zac rode up on their
skateboards, followed by Alex running. Alex and Kael did not skateboard.
"Well, I need to get going. My class is way over there," he said.
"Okay, we'll see you at recess," Alysha said.
Kael and Alex began to walk off while Lance and Zac were boarding
away. "And Karen, don't let me catch you with any more drugs!" he said
playing, and flirting.
"Shh! Don't tell anyone!" Karen called back.
After Kael had walked off, Alysha looked at Karen.
"So Karen, wanna spend the night?" she asked.
"Dude, Alysha, you are like my best friend." Karen told her.
