Chapter Three

Penny, the psychiatrist, was currently packing up her desk at the end of the day, when the door opened. She looked up and returned to her work when she saw the person who entered. It was a man in his late thirties. He had blond hair and was wearing a nice suit. He closed the door and went to sit in a chair opposite her desk.

“So, how did it go?” He asked, in a crisp British accent.

“Wonderfully.” Penny replied, her voice dripping with sarcasm.

“So it went well then?” The man said.

“I hate this.” Penny said as she closed her brief case. “I can’t do this any more. It’s wrong…and inhumane.”

“Yes.”

“How can you stand it?” Penny said, her voice growing continuously louder with each word. “How can you stand to do this to people.”

“Because it’s a test. I get paid to do this, as do you.”

“It’s still not right.” Penny muttered darkly.

“Okay.” The British man sighed. “What happened today?”

“Two of them met.” Penny replied.

“Oh?” He raised an eyebrow. “This isn’t out of the ordinary. They meet all the time.”

“This is different.” Penny replied. “It was Karly and Spencer.”

He seemed to have frozen in surprise. For a few minutes he just sat there with a look of horror on his face.”

“What did you do?”

“What do you think I did? I spent their entire sessions making them believe it wasn’t real.” Penny sighed again. “Then prescribed them to medication that would ensure they forget this entire incident.”

“Good. How are they going, otherwise?”

“They’re going to crack soon.” Her voice was bitter.

“Yes, I’m sure they will. All the others cracked eventually. These two were stronger then all of them, but they will crack in the end. And then our test will be complete.”

“I’m not so sure they’ll forget each other.” Penny said. “They had a strong bond.”

“We broke that.” He said sharply, his voice full of anger. “Never mention that again.”

“You’re just upset, because you almost messed up the test. All ebcause of their bond.” Penny said, her vocie shrill with nerves.

“Shut up.” The man said.

Penny sat there in silence, not wanting to speak to him, but knowing she’d have to tell him her findings. “He told her something.”

“What?”

“He said it was important. But she couldn’t remember what he told her…and he couldn’t remember telling her.”

“This isn’t good.”

“No.”

“It seemed quite crytic.”

“I know.”

“And he’s always been so Goddamn smart.”

“Even as a child.”

“Damn it!” He hit thetable with his fist. “Fix it.”

“How?” Penny said with a little laugh. “It’s your test, you fix it.”

He tightened his hand into a fist, then slowly released it. “Don’t humour me, woman. I want you to fix this problem, and I want you to do it quickly. This test is so close to the end, and I am not going to start it again. You’re going to fix this little…glitch, and everything is going to go according to plan. You’re life depends on it.”

Penny winced and swallowed hard. “I’ll fix it.”

He gave her a hard look. “You better.”

With those final words he swiftly got up and left her office, closing the door behind him. It was as though he had never been there.
