The First Christmas
One cold and dark December in Bethlehem was born,
A tiny grey-black kitten, an uneventful morn.
Of all his many siblings, only he survived.
With the love and strength God gave him was the will to stay alive.
He wandered from his mother out into the fallen snow.
Though the cold did surround him, his mission did he know.
Then a golden-clad archangel appeared with blinding light.
To the lonely kitten, it was a thankful sight.
The cherub told the kitten to keep on walking far,
Our little one looked up to see a brilliant shining star.
The angel disappeared and the kitten mewed in fright;
He had not reached the stable and already it was night.
So chilled by weariness, he plodded slowly on
Until he found the manger he wished to look upon.
Inside was gentle Mary and her baby son.
Asleep with only straw to protect the little one.
The kitten curled up near the babe, his duty did he know:
To warm God's child and keep him from outside snow and foes.
Now people listen carefully and always remember that,
Jesus Christ, our saviour was saved by a kitty cat!
