Many years ago, when
I was a little girl
My daddy would drive me and
My brother down an old country road
To take us to the beach
But now I'm the one who drives
And the road is still here
But that beach of mine is gone
Swallowed up by the sea
So when I go down this road
Old country road
There's nowhere to go
But down this road
Old country road
My little plot of sand
My castle and my tangy salty air
Where have you gone?
A few years ago you were all here on this land
But the land is under the sea
That's where you are too
But now I'm the one who drives
And the road is still here
But that beach of mine is gone
Swallowed up by the sea
So when I go down this road
Old country road
There's nowhere to go
But down this road
Old country road
What can I say?
My childhood memory
Is under the sea
One place that I want to be
Is no more, it's not with me
It's resting with my memory
Resting under the sea
But now I'm the one who drives
And the road is still here
But that beach of mine is gone
Swallowed up by the sea
So when I go down this road
Old country road
There's nowhere to go
But down this road
Old country road
Old country road
There's nowhere you can take me
But you keep leading me on
Like a ghost with no place to go
Old country road
Don't lead me down here anymore
There's nothing to see but a long-gone beach
The tourists are gone
Off to litter some place else
But my beach is gone
My little plot of sand
My castle and my tangy salty air
All is lost under the sea
But now I'm the one who drives
And the road is still here
But that beach of mine is gone
Swallowed up by the sea
So when I go down this road
Old country road
There's nowhere to go
But down this road
Old country road
Nowhere to go
But down this road
Old country road
