Break Away
Chapter 4
"Well, um…I just called you to, um…" Liana said nervously.
"Yes?" Alex pried. Liana could hear her grin over the phone.
"What I wanted to say was…I want to give this a try."
"Well, I expected a response from you but certainly not this soon." Alex replied.
"I've been thinking about it and…I'd like to try it out." Liana said. As soon as the words left her mouth, she knew they sounded lame.
"Are you really sure about this, Liana?" Alex was serious now. "You could just be caught up in the moment and I don't want to do anything with you that you'll regret. Maybe you should think about it a little longer, just so there won't be any problems with snap-decision."
"Look, I'm sure." Liana said nervously.
"Great." Alex laughed. "You almost convinced me."
"Alex-
"Just think about it a little more, Liana. I'm not going anywhere." Alex said. A click on the other end of the phone line told Liana that she had hung up.
Liana ran her fingers through her hair. What a day.
"Think about it some more…" She murmured echoing Alex's words. "Maybe I should." She flopped back onto her bed and tightly closed her eyes. Soon, she had drifted off to sleep.
That night, Liana dreamed a bittersweet dream. A dream of love, lust, passion, and want- a dream about a boy. The mysterious boy's soft kisses were like nicotine, driving her wild. His moans were like music. His breath was like a warm summer breeze. When Liana woke that morning, she found that she liked that feeling- it was a feeling of comfort.
Liana took a quick shower, dressed, and grabbed a piece of toast before heading out to school. She felt so different today. Yesterday, she had been filled with want- she wanted Alex. Today, though, she didn't feel much of anything. However, her heart did jump every time she thought of her, but she dismissed it as sheer nervousness out of the fact that she practically told her she wanted to make sweet, lesbian love to her. Her heart skipped another beat.
"Hey, Liana!" Frankie screamed, as Liana entered the schoolyard. Liana was too lost in space to notice her. "Liana! Hey, Lia!"
"Huh?" Liana said, shaking her head a little. "Did you say something, Frankie?"
"I was waving to you for like five minutes!" Frankie said, put out.
"Oh, sorry." Liana said, monotone.
"Hey, what's your damage?" Frankie asked.
"Huh?"
"What's your problem?"
"Oh, nothing. I just…I had a long night." Liana said, absentmindedly tightening the ponytail that held her fiery, red locks back.
"Did Alex keep you up?"
"Huh?!" Liana screamed. "What's that supposed to mean?"
"I thought you guys had a study session or something yesterday." Frankie said confusedly.
"Oh, yea…we did." Liana said, regaining her breath.
"Lia, you need to lighten up." Frankie laughed. When she got no response from Liana, she tugged on the back of Liana's ponytail.
"Ow!" Liana screamed. But Frankie was already halfway across the schoolyard. "You bitch! Get back here!"

"Miss Stewart, you're late." Mr. Zinick said as Liana came storming into class.
"I am so sorry, Mr. Zinick. I forgot my book and had to run back to my locker to get it." Liana apologized.
"Don't let it happen again, Miss Stewart." He scolded.
"It won't, Mr. Zinick." Liana answered.
"Alright, well take a seat."
Liana looked around the class for an empty chair. Just her luck, there was an empty one right next to Alex. Liana sat down quietly and ignored Alex's sideward glances. Finally Alex got tired of Liana's silence and passed her a note.
Well? Alex wrote.
Well, what? Liana wrote back. She was playing dumb, it was her defense mechanism.
-You know what, Liana. Did you think it over or do you need more time?
-I thought about it.
-And?
-And, you were right, I was just caught up in the moment. I'm sorry for all that stuff I said yesterday. I was confused.
Alex took a longer to answer this time.
-So what does that mean? You're going to ignore the fact that you practically came out to me yesterday night? Even if you don't want to date me, Liana, you still can't ignore the facts that are right in front of you. I'll just say this; don't conform to anyone else, be yourself…whoever that may be…
-Thanks for the advice, but I'm done talking about this right now.
Liana went to pass the note back to Alex when-
"Miss Stewart! Give me that note, right now!" Mr. Zinick yelled from the front of the classroom.
Liana gulped and walked slowly up to the front of the class with the note. Mr. Zinick held his hand out for the offending item.
"Wait, Mr. Zinick, the note isn't Liana's fault! I had just passed it to her to ask if she could show me the football field later on. I'm terribly sorry, it's just that…er, in London we were allowed to pass notes in class. It's a great thing I have you as a teacher to point out these helpful hints, brilliant job!" Alex patted the teacher on the back.
"Well, thank you, Alex. Now, I wouldn't want to punish you, I know that customs are very different in London." Mr. Zinick beamed with pride. Then turned to Liana, his face set in dislike. "Here you go, Miss Stewart." He said simply.
After class, Alex caught up with Liana at her locker.
"I'm really sorry for dragging you into all this Liana, I really didn't mean to. I mean, I thought my instincts were pretty good. Maybe I should stop following my instincts." She laughed lightly.
"It's okay, Alex. I know that you're completely open with your sexuality and that's fine with me. But your sexuality and my sexuality aren't the same." Liana shut the locker and headed to her next class.
Alex walked behind her at a slower pace.

"Oh, look at my horoscope, Lia!" Frankie said, during homeroom. "It says 'You are too conventional lately, open up to new experiences, Scorpio.' Lia, you're a Scorpio, that goes for you, too."
Liana rolled her eyes. "I can't believe you believe in that stuff. It's absolutely stupid and a waste of my time."
Frankie grasped her heart in mock-outrage. "Blasphemy! Astrology is totally real! I look at mine everyday and I've had some pretty good luck. Knock on wood."
"Anyway, when are we getting started on our Science project? I figured we could do the research at my house after school." Liana said.
"Why not today?" Frankie asked.
"Sure."

"Okay, so where should we start?" Liana asked. Her and Frankie were at her house working on the dream project.
"Well, one of us should keep a dream diary. We could probably analyze that with some facts we find on the Internet and try to make sense of it."
"Okay, sounds logical. Maybe we should switch off on writing dream diaries. One of us does it for a week then the other does it for a week. That way, we can compare."
"Oh, that sounds good. I'll go first." Frankie volunteered.
"Good, cause I would just like to sleep and not have to write anything at the moment. I haven't been getting much sleep lately."
"Hey, what happened today? In the morning?" Frankie asked.
"What do you mean?" Liana replied.
"Well, you got all weirded out when I asked you about Alex? Did you guys fight or something, you didn't talk at all during homeroom."
"Well…it's nothing." Liana said, shaking her head.
"Lia! It is so not nothing! Tell me!" Frankie demanded.
"Well, um…"
"Say it!"
"Alextoldmeshewasalesbian." Liana said in a rush.
"What?"
"Alex told me she was a lesbian." Liana said more clearly.
"No way!" Frankie said, astonished.
"Yes. And she was trying to convince me to have an experience with her." Liana answered, blushing.
"I can't believe it!" Frankie yelled.
"I know!"
"Everyone's turning gay!"
"Huh?"
"Totally!" Frankie answered, running a hand through her hair. "You know Jeffrey Mackenzie?"
"Yea…"
"Gay." Frankie answered simply.
"Chrystie Phillips?"
"Yea."
"Lesbian."
"Carter Kramsey."
"Gay?" Liana said in shock.
"Oh, most definitely. So is, Jessie Williams, Dorris Kingston, Kelly Jefferson, Thomas Fitzpatrick, Darcy Thomas, Erin Jameson…"
"Oh my God…" Liana said. "All of them?"
"Yep. And mostly everyone else is bi." Frankie answered.
"No way!" Liana yelled. "You're joking."
"Nope, I'm afraid not." Frankie said. "It's like gay and lesbian are the new black."
"Wow…" Said Liana, shaking her head.
"That's it! That's it, that's it, that's it!" Frankie said, bouncing up and down, her hair flowing out behind her.
"What?" Liana asked.
"That could be my new experience!" Frankie said. "Frankie Huntington, bisexual."
"Now, you've gone crazy!" Liana said exasperatedly. "All this over Astrology!"
"Why not?"
"I mean, Frankie, to become bisexual you have to at least be attracted to both sexes."
"Hey, I'm not a homophobe! That's good enough for me! Besides, that what an experience is all about! Experiencing something for the first time! Who knows, I may actually find out that my soul mate is a girl!"
"Yea, if Chris Shantey was a transsexual." Liana laughed.
"Oh, I am so over Chris! He's dating that slut Monica!" Frankie huffed.
"But still, Frankie, you can't just become a bisexual!"
"Oh, don't be sad, Liana, you can do it with me!"
"Um, no." Liana answered monotone.
"Oh, why not?"
"I'm not bi or lesbian."
"Oh, you will be." Frankie smirked.
"Why do you say that?" Liana asked curiously.
"Because if lesbian and gay are the new black, then bi is the new pink."
