The Idolaters
I saw a great stone idol
before a crowd it did stand
his teeth they dripped with human blood
a sword was in his hand
A man ran toward the idol
saying "Lord, I'll do what you like!"
then he picked up a little child
and killed him with a knife
and all the crowds around him
eagerly did the same
saying "we love you, Lord almighty!"
praising the idols name
and screams they filled the streets
on human bodies they tread
our God they said is still not pleased
not enough blood is shed
I looked up at the idol
a grin was on his face
he said "I need more blood to drink, my friends,
before you can have my grace."
the people returned his grin
pleased they were to go on
they would kill all who wished their god ill
before the break of dawn
so all who bowed not to the idol
who in terror turned away
were burned until they were merely ashes
one single mound of grey
I lifted my eyes toward the mountains
hard to see through smoke so deep
but I think I saw a little Lamb
and I think I saw Him weep.
