Happy
You expect me to be
Happy
No tears
No sadness
No anger
When life hands you lemons
They say
Make lemonade
Screw lemonade
I say
You expect me to be
What I'm not
Constantly smiling
Forgetting the pain
And the demons that stalk
My every move
No shadows
All light
The eternal ray of sunshine
Well I'm not
The sun has set
The darkness overtaking
The light
I am the darkness
The kind that is moonless
And terrifying
You expect me to be
Laughter incarnate
Lighting your day
Singing songs
Of happiness
How can I sing
If I don't know the tune
And the words are foreign on my tongue?
The candle in the night
Is supposed to be me
But what if I told you
I am the night
That you are so frightened of?
The thing you hate
And yet, you wish you could save me
From what?
Myself?
An impossible task,
You set for yourself
Because I will never be
What you wish
You expect me to be.
Happy.
What I'm not.
Laughter incarnate.
And yet
You are not
So how can you expect me to be
Happy?
