Sunday, June 1st
Felix fluttered his eyes open and immediately clamped them shut again. “Turn the sun down,” he groaned, and Breanna shifted by his side.
“Morning, baby,” she murmured with a yawn.
Felix and Breanna had escaped upstairs last night after what had turned into a multi-hour game of truth or dare. They’d retreated into Rebecca’s bedroom, locked the door, and then bunked on her bed, too exhausted to consider anything but sleep. Felix looked at his watch now and began rising. It was a little after noon – if the others weren’t up yet, they would be soon.
Breanna went down first, reveling in the Georgia summer warmth and wishing she’d brought shorts. She was wearing brown hip huggers and a tank top – all of the other girls were asleep on floor or couches with denim or pajama shorts. Her eyes scanned the living room. The only two missing were Sasha and Garland.
“Kitchen,” Felix directed, coming down behind Breanna. “If Garland’s up, he’s in the kitchen.”
The pair headed down a short hallway and found Garland eating muffins and Sasha drinking coffee.
“Alcohol’s evil,” Garland informed them when he noticed Bre and Felix had entered the room.
Felix’s mouth widened into a mischievous smile. “Headache?”
“Nah, stomach ache,” he corrected. “But it’s cool. I have sustenance.” Garland popped another muffin into his mouth without hesitation.
“How are YOU holding up?” Breanna asked Sasha, running her nails down his back in a friendly greeting.
Sasha shivered slightly at her touch. “I’m fine. I didn’t drink. I think me and Paige are the only ones who didn’t touch it at all.”
“I didn’t mean your body.”
He glanced in her eyes and saw that Breanna was talking about his emotions. Sasha smiled and said, before answering, “You know, I’m really glad I got to finally meet you. You’re very cool, Breanna; I can see why Felix talks about you all the time. Yeah . . . I’m fine. I’ll be okay.”
“Do you want us to help you guys clean up?” asked Felix, motioning his head back towards the living room.
“No, don’t worry about it. Morgan and Paige offered yesterday. I think the three of us could get it back together pretty quickly and then I think we’re heading to the Tooler mall.” Garland snickered. “Paige was saying something about Morgan needing summer clothes for the season and a sale at Penney’s or something.”
Sasha raised an eyebrow. “Paige is buying Morgan’s wardrobe now?”
“Hey dude, I don’t ask. I just wander around in the mall.” Garland nodded to Felix. “You two about to take off?”
“Yeah, I think so. Dad’s gonna barbecue this afternoon and Denise’ll probably want her car back.” Felix gave Garland a hug and clapped Sasha on the back. “See you guys later!”
“It was great meeting everybody,” Breanna said again to both Sasha and Garland. “I’m really looking forward to hanging with you guys again before I go home.”
Garland waved goodbye as they headed down the hallway and out the door. Then he turned back to Sasha, who was lighting a cigarette. “ARE you going to be okay? Truthfully, bro?”
He nodded. “I think so. Maybe I can get my head together and figure out how to do the whole . . . boyfriend . . . thing.”
Garland leaned back against the counter. “Yeah. Me and you both, man. I think I’m going to try to talk to Gen soon. See if I can’t make the dating thing with me and her official.” He was trying to sound cool about it, but there was a goofy grin on his face.
Sasha laughed. “Sounds like a plan to me.”
They guys grinned at each other, and then Sasha lifted a hand of farewell. “I better get going myself. I’ll wake Jake from the dead and aim us home. My mom’s coming home this evening with the baby and I’d like to be there for that.”
“You saw her being born, didn’t you?”
“Yeah, actually, I did.” Sasha had a strangely private, pleased and awed look upon his face. “There’s no way to completely describe that.”
Garland nodded. “Maybe, squishy? Gooey? Way too much information?”
Sash shook his head no. “More like . . . beautiful. Cosmic.” He took one last swig of his coffee and set the mug down. “I’ll see you after ‘while, Gar.”
“Okay.” Garland paused. “Hey, Sash? Me and Morgan meant to ask you – what did you name your sister again?”
“Emily. Emily Terra Blake.”
“What exactly does that mean?”
Sasha paused, and glanced back at Garland. He still had a still, lovely smile on his face. “Emily Terra. It means ‘admiring Earth’.”
Garland smiled.
“Ah don’t wanna wake up,” moaned Jake, stumbling through the living room. Sasha led him by one arm. “Mah head hurts . . . make it go away . . . make the bad man stop, Sasha . . . oh Gawd wah did ah drink like that . . . “
“It’ll be okay, Jake,” Sasha assured. “We’ll get you home, you can take some aspirin, hit a real bed . . . “
“Will you read me a story?” Jake murmured, and disappeared out the door. Sasha closed it behind them.
Garland giggled, and then looked around the room at the other six, lying asleep. LeeAnne, Mariah, Paige, and Arizona were all sort of cuddled up to Morgan, who was sprawled out in the middle. Garland snapped a picture of the image – Morgan’s shot for the players’ club.
Then he looked over at Gen. She was asleep on the far end of the living room, curled on the window seat. Her short blonde hair was up in a stump of a ponytail. Her toned, lovely legs were resting dead below a blanket that was mostly falling off. Garland went and picked up the blanket, covering her with it carefully, and resisted the urge to kiss her then and there. Yes, Garland thought, watching her quietly. He would definitely have to talk to her very soon.
THE END!!
