It happened so suddenly.
The sky was ablaze.
The earth split in two.
No warning was given.

The soldiers took the field,
Pouring out of the holes in the earth,
Pouring out of the holes in the sky.
Each one there to settle it all once again.

Darkness from one side,
Light from the other.
Commander-in-chiefs were never seen
They sat on their thrones and waited.

The children of darkness hissed and screamed,
Twisting their horrific faces at the other side.
They looked like deformed children
Swimming in darkness and corruption.

The children of light yelled and shrieked,
Their beautiful faces flawed for the first time.
At their mutated counterparts, they leered,
Hatred growing in their once-pure hearts.

There were no bullets in the battle.
No bombs. No tanks. Nothing like that.
But they had all they needed to shed blood.
They had all they needed to destroy.

The earth and sky grew red.
Red with the children's blood and anger.
The maw of the earth opened up beneath us;
The sky rained fire to the children below.

The civilians dropped and prayed
But no god was listening.
They were all fighting in this futile war
Where every soul was taken by the earth and sky.

The earth was torn apart.
The sky became a void.
The last drop of blood was spilled.
The sides retreated again.

Nothing was left where we used to be.
No life remained on the battlefield.
The war wasn't over; it would never be over
Just the battles between the children.

Then, Heaven sent forth a sprout of life,
And Hell left darkness upon this earth.
Once again, the two powers prepared themselves
To begin the cycle again.
