AUTHOR: Okay, I don't know why I did this. I guess the romantic one inside me wanted me to do this. Dusty Springfield’s “I Only Want To Be With You” inspired it. It's a sweet, romantic and very sappy song. I'm a bit surprised myself because this is a first for me…It’s a very none-Wicked-Tongue work (chuckles) Pleas r & r it.
Dedicated to GoldenTears. I'm actually wondering where you are right now. But anyway, this is for you. If you ever get to read it, hope you like it.
I ONLY WANT TO BE WITH YOU
I don't know what it is that makes me love you so
I only know I never want to let you go
'Cause you've started something, oh, can't you see
That ever since we met, you've had a hold on me?
It happens to be true
I only want to be with you
The whole ballroom was dim, lit only by a number of scented candles. He walked towards her, a gentle smile lighting up her face that tugged at the corners of her lips in a delightful way, a smile that never failed to take his breath away. He smiled back at her.
His eyes, warm and liquid-chocolate, looked at her as if she was the loveliest woman alive, the sweetest one, the only woman in this planet, his own heaven-on-earth. And as the music began to play, he took her in his arms, and whisked her away in the magic of song, the song that always reminded her of that fateful night.
It doesn't matter where you go or what you do
I want to spend each moment of the day with you
Oh, look what has happened with just one kiss
I never knew that I could be in love like this
It's crazy but it's true
I only want to be with you
She'd never been to any dances in her life until now. She hadn't wanted to. She didn't want to be humiliated, embarrassed, laughed at or be spoken about in private, taunted by others. But, for some reason, this night was different. This night, she finally went to a dance.
Her nerves were shaking and she was scared. Wearing only a simple cocktail dress, she stayed in one spot. But of course, when one needed to pee, one had to pee. And she just had to. When she exited the rest room, a new song was playing.
That was when she saw him. That was when their eyes met and locked. He then strode towards her confidently. His eyes focused only upon her being. She couldn't help herself. She stared at him. She looked for signs of malice, but found none. Then he stopped in front of her. He gazed at her eyes as if he gazed at her soul. Then he asked quietly, "May I have this dance?"
You stopped and smiled at me
And asked if I'd care to dance
I fell into your open arms
I didn't stand a chance
Now, listen to me
I just want to be beside you everywhere
As long as we're together, honey, I don't care
'Cause you've started something, oh, can't you see
That ever since we met, you've had a hold on me?
No matter what you do,
I only want to be with you
She didn't know what to do. She had never danced with anyone before. She wanted to refuse him, to avoid making a scene, to avoid making the two of them a laughingstock. She wanted to shield herself from whatever heartache the consequence of dancing with a man in public would cause.
But the temptation to have her very first dance overrode all her fears and cautions. She felt her head jerk a nod for her voice suddenly seemed to have gone on a vacation. Then he took her in his arms, and through the whole night, he was with her, dancing, talking, smiling and laughing.
When the band finally started playing the last song, she became frightened once more. She wanted this night to last forever and for this guy, whose name she still didn't know, to be with her always.
Yet her mind warned her. Her heart dreaded the reason for such a sweet miracle to happen to her. He was smiling at her when she leaned back to ask her question.
"Why are you doing this? Dancing with me and spending the whole time with me? Why didn't you dance with the others?"
His smile faded. His eyes seared into hers solemnly and intently before he replied.
I just want to be beside you everywhere
As long as we're together, honey, I don't care
'Cause you've started something, oh, can't you see?
That ever since we met, you've had a hold on me.
No matter what you do,
I only want to be with you
They swayed to the rhythm of the music. They whirled to the tune of the song. They held each other as if there was nothing else more important than keeping each other safe and cherished in one another's arms. The whole world disappeared. Nothing existed but only the two of them.
When she heard the crescendo of the music, she opened her eyes and got a glimpse of her wheelchair that stayed put on the corner where she was before he asked her to dance. She felt his right arm, strong and solid, supporting her back. His other arm tucked beneath the backs of her knees for he carried her every time they danced.
She clutched him more closely to her, pressing herself against his body. Then she looked at him and smiled before murmuring, "Do you remember?" He smiled back, sweet and tender. "Yes, I remember."
I said no matter, no matter what you do,
I only want to be with you
As if to test him, but truly just to hear him say it again to her, she repeated the question she asked him long ago, on the night they'd first danced to this beautiful song.
"Why are you doing this? Dancing with me and spending the whole time with me? Why didn't you dance with the others?"
He then leaned his forehead against hers, kissed her lips with the barest touch of his, soft yet heart stopping, and whispered in reply.
"Because I only want to be with you."
