An Empty Promise

I lie awake in the dark
Cold, early call of the morning
Blistering pain and anguish
Grip the very foundation of my soul

I contemplate you, your face
Your beautiful smile
And how burned I’ve become
Black charred and limp

I ponder how it all started
Your inviting smile
Your knowing words
Your infectious laugh

I was a fool, naïve
You were but an empty promise
An empty shell,
A burnt out husk

I called and called
Wanting to ask you out
Wanting just to be near you
To talk and to laugh

Now only do I realize
You were the right kind of wrong
As thunder rolls and the rain falls
So too do I understand

I lay under the stars
Drenched in the pouring rain
Yet a strange serenity engulfs me
Comforts me, encourages me
Gives me the will to live

I had but a void within me
Still I chose to cover it
To seek that which cannot be found
To touch that which was forbidden
And you were it….
