I sat under a tree
In the mountain's lee
On a warm summer night by the ocean
And the moon in the sky
Dropped a globe of her light
But 'twas it for me? I'd no notion
It fell through the air
So lovely and fair
And at my sore feet it landed
But when I reached down
To look at the thing
The walls 'round my heart then unbanded.
For inside this globe
In a shimmering robe
A beautiful maiden stood singing.
She looked up at me
And sang of the sea
Of the cries of the gulls swiftly winging.
My heart melted there
In the soft summer air
'Neath the trees in the wind gently swaying
And I picked up the sphere
And cradled it near
And down to the beach ran I, singing.
And there at the sea
Stood the lady and me
Now her voice was drowned out by the waves
And I cracked the globe there
Took her out with great care
And watched her run off through the haze.
As I walked home alone
With my heart dark as stone
I heard gentle footstepsbehind me
The princess stood there
With the moon on her hair
And smiled as if to say 'thank ye'.
So off through the night
And out of my sight
The mysterious creature then sped
But I'll have great devotion
For the girl of the ocean
And remember the night the moon bled.
