A/N: This was inspired by watching the music clip for 'Thursday's Child' by
David Bowie. If you've seen that, you might be able to see where this poem
has come from.

IN THE BATHROOM MIRROR

She wonders what's going on sometimes
She'd ask but he won't give an answer
He stands looking at himself quietly
in the bathroom mirror

He smiles as she stands next to him
She begins to take out her contacts
She refuses to look him in the eye
through the bathroom mirror

She busies herself with her arrangements
She ignores him politely
They used to talk together but now
gaze into the bathroom mirror

'Are we getting old now?'
'Are you having an affair?'
'How come we don't talk anymore?'
'How come you won't look at me?'

His hand brushes against hers
He takes his toothbrush without a thought
Her toothbrush remains alone in the cup
reflected in the bathroom mirror

She's weepy but he can't comfort
He was pushed away last time
He wants to reach out and say it's okay
but for now stares in the bathroom mirror

She's oblivious to his wondering
He's aware of her sorrow
They stand together like statues,
watching in the bathroom mirror

'You know I love you'
'I'm going through a phrase right now'
'When will you come back to me?'
'I don't know. Will I?'

She closes her contact lenses kit
He places his toothbrush back
She gives him a gentle smile which
drifts through the bathroom mirror

But he doesn't return it
and so she leaves
Turning off their music on the way
and leaving him to his thoughts

The younger selves look at the lovers
on the other side of the bathroom mirror

'I think it might be over between them'

'Where did we go wrong?'
