A/N: This was a homework assignment. I hope it’s alright! (It’s supposed to be an ironic fairytale)

Once upon a time, there lived a perfect girl. She had gold hair, blue eyes, and perfectly tanned skin. She aced all of her classes, wore all of the right clothes, and was the most popular girl in her school. She had a perfect boyfriend who was also blonde, blue eyed, and perfectly tanned. Her parents were rich, she was an only child, and she was daddy’s little princess. Her life was just like a fairytale, complete with Prince Charming and Happily Ever After.

v

Eveylyn was her name. She loved the way her life was going. She always was given what she wanted, and she was in the position that every girl dreamed of. She was going to be crowned Prom Queen along side the love of her life, Derehk. They were to become the best couple the school prom had ever seen.

The only problem was, Derehk had still not asked Eveylyn to the dance. She knew they were going together, but she was a traditionalist. She wanted to experience the romance of having her Prince Charming asking her to the prom. Unfortunately, Prince Charming was also Prince Oblivious.

Eveylyn was outside eating lunch with her best friend, Malaynie. Derehk wasn’t with them because of football practise.

"I don’t know, Mal, I’m starting to think that Derehk’s never going to ask me," whined Eveylyn, pouting.

"Don’t worry, Evvey," said Malaynie, ignoring the annoying tone in her friend’s voice. "He’ll ask you. He’s just waiting for the right moment!"

Eveylyn wasn’t convinced. "I really want him to ask me to the prom," she sighed.

"He will," assured Malaynie.

"But how do you know?"

"Well, he is your boyfriend, and no other girl would go with him because of this known fact."

Eveylyn smiled. "Good point."

v

Later on that day, Eveylyn was walking through the hallway, heading towards her last class before lunch when she heard someone call her.

"Hey, Ev!"

Eveylyn turned to see Derehk running towards her.

"Hi, Derehk," she greeted happily.

"I wanted to ask you..."

Eveylyn’s heart rose. He was finally going to ask her! She opened her mouth to say ‘Yes’..

"...when should I pick you up? You know, for the prom. I mean, after all, you are my date."

Eveylyn’s heart dropped. That was definitely not the way she wanted to be asked out! It wasn’t romantic at all!

She looked at him angrily and said, "You know what Derehk, how about never? I don’t want to go with someone who assumes I’m going to the prom with him!"

She turned on her heel and stormed away, leaving behind a very bewildered Derehk.

v

Things were definitely not working the way Eveylyn would have liked. Not only had Derehk turned out to be like every other guy she’d ever gone out with, she now had no date for the prom.

She put her books down on an empty table and went in search of a book for her English essay. Walking down one of the aisles, she nearly collided with a kneeling figure.

"Sorry," she said.

"It’s alright," he replied, standing up.

His eyes widened when he saw who it was. "Oh! H-hi, E-Eveylyn!"

"Do I know you?" she asked, puzzled.

"Er, n-no. I don’t think so. I’m Stephen."

"Hello, Stephen. Um, would you happen to know where I could find the literature section? I need to write an essay."

"Oh, of course! Right this way."

He led her down several aisles until they reached the section she wanted.

"Here you go!" he said, grinning.

She gave him a warm smile, "Thank you, Stephen."

"You’re welcome." He returned the smile.

They ended up eating lunch together at a little restaurant down the street. Eveylyn really liked Stephen. He was nothing like she expected at first, in fact, he was completely the opposite. They became instant friends.

As for Stephen, he was thrilled. The most popular girl in school was hanging out with him, and not her usual crowd.

After lunch, the pair slowly walked back to school, not wanting to go into the drab building on such a beautiful day. Eveylyn was happy again, already forgetting about Derehk. She liked hanging out with Stephen a lot better than him, anyway.

They made it to the school just as the bell began to ring.

"Well, good-bye, Stephen. I had fun," said Eveylyn, smiling.

"Me, too," replied Stephen. "Good-bye!"

He waved as they headed to their separate classes.

v

Over the next few weeks leading up to the prom, the pair started hanging out more and more frequently. Malaynie started to join them and also grew rather fond of Stephen. He was a welcome change from the usual stuck-up people Eveylyn tended to hang out with. Eveylyn was starting to change, too. Whenever the three hung-out, she seemed to forget about the different groups at school, and where they stood on the social totem-pole. In fact, she was just like a different, better person.

Unfortunately for Eveylyn, she was just now realizing that Malaynie had been her only true friend since the beginning of high school. The rest had just wanted to be with her because of her popularity.

She was also realizing her growing fondness for Stephen. She decided that she was going to ask him to the dance.

v

Stephen had always had a huge crush on Eveylyn. Ever since he had first laid eyes on her. Of course, he had no chance with her on the dating level. A cheerleader did not go out with the president of the book-club. It just didn’t work that way in high school. It was like class systems in the 19th century. She was first-class, while he was all the way down at third-class.

He sighed and rubbed his green eyes, then went back to putting away books.

v

"Hey, Stephen, I want to ask you something."

Stephen looked up at Eveylyn hopefully. "Yes?"

"Would you like to go with me to the prom? As a date?"

He broke into a wide grin. He opened his mouth to say "Yes", but out popped a sad "No".

She looked surprised. So did he. At first he had no idea why he had said no. Then he realized what it was.

He could never be with her. They were too different. She was a cheerleader, he was the president of the book-club. Good enough for friendship, but nothing more.

Eveylyn was leading a double-life. She acted like herself when she was alone with him and Malaynie, but she was different when she was with her other "friends". Stephen couldn’t hang out with people like that, people who pretended to be friends with Eveylyn, but in truth, could care less. And he didn’t want to make her life more difficult while she was trying to sort it out. It didn’t matter that she was different with him and Malaynie, she still was the Queen-of-the-School.

"I’m sorry, Eveylyn. But that just wouldn’t work. I don’t want to complicate things."

Her eyes were filled with sadness. "Oh. Alright then."

Suddenly Stephen’s eyes lit up. "Wait, how would you like to go to the prom just as friends? No romance or anything involved. It could be you, me, and Malaynie."

Eveylyn thought for a minute, then also smiled. "Okay, then. That might actually be more fun."

And it was. The three were given strange looks throughout the night, but they didn’t care. They were leaving high-school, anyway, so it was time to forget about ‘class-systems’. Eveylyn did not once regret coming to the dance with Stephen as just friends, and Malaynie was glad to see her best-friend acting like herself in front of everyone. She was still crowned Prom Queen beside Derehk, but she didn’t care all that much anymore. She had more fun playing Frisbee with the tiara, than standing and getting her picture taken.

Overall, the three best friends had the best time at the prom than anyone else. And they had to be the most different set of friends than anyone had seen.

v

Once upon a time, there lived a perfect girl. She had gold hair, blue eyes, and perfectly tanned skin. She aced all of her classes, wore all of the right clothes, and was the most popular girl in her school. But she had just learned a tough lesson.

She may have Prince Charming and many loyal followers, but popularity rarely gave you everything you need to make your life complete. Especially when Prince Charming wasn’t that bright, and her many loyal followers would abandon her at the flip of a coin. It also didn’t matter what she was when she was still in high-school because no one would look at her resume and hires her because she had been Prom Queen.

She had just found out that only one of her popular friends was true to her, and that besides that friend, she only had one other one, which actually wasn’t a bad thing, since the two were the best friends she had ever had in her life.

She had also learned that she couldn’t separate herself into different pieces, to make everyone happy. It just backfired, leaving nothing in its place. The last part of her tedious lesson, was that romance can be replaced with friendship, and that a good friend was better than a temporary boyfriend any day.
