Prologue
On a distant edge of an unknown galaxy, three Varn scout ships patrol a small area on the out skirts of their territory. Each ship carries a crew of 6 and have faster than light, otherwise known as FTL, flight capabilities. They fly in a triangle formation gathering data and only stop every now and then to process the raw information.
The Varn are an insect like race, they stand upright on two legs and have four arms; two large, primary arms for everyday things and two smaller which are too frail for most jobs, and all four are tipped with 3 prongs as fingers. Their heads are very wasp-like, with their antennae, 2 large globes on the side of their heads, and sharp mandibles capable of tearing through low grade armor like tissue. Similar to ants and termites, the Varn act as a single entity with a hive like existence. As much as 85 percent of their total population is produced in reproduction facilities while the remaining 15 percent, governing bodies, upper-class, and scholars, are allowed the independence and freedom of interbreeding. (Sex in case you were wondering...)
As the 3 scout ships stop for their routine data crunching one notices a tiny blip in the data stream. A small space/time anomaly which reads a mass of a large planet, yet in their current position they see none. Upon further investigation they find the source, a small pebble sized anomaly floating about.
Paying no heed, their main objective being to scout for fresh planets, they take off again to complete their rounds. As they fly about, the pebble just happens to drift by one of the scout ships. It assumes that it will bounce off its reflector shield. However upon impact of the pebble the scout ship stops abruptly and begins to be sucked into it. The scout ship stretches and warps in impossible ways to fit into a tiny hole until it disappears entirely into oblivion. The two remaining ships instantly categorize the pebble as a threat and send for a nearby science vessel to investigate, keeping a close eye on the anomaly.
When the Science vessel arrives, it begins to scan and probe the anomaly to the best of its abilities, to no avail. None of the Varn's science vessel's delicate instruments could identify yet alone label it. Intrigued by it, the Varn Science vessel attempts to capture the anomaly via tractor beam, it doesn't work. They then decide to try a more physical approach and just grab it. From the side of the Science vessel a long mechanical arm unfolds and makes its way toward the anomaly. Slowly the mechanical limb stretches outward, then with its mechanical vice attempts to clamp onto it.
Upon contact with the arm the anomaly instantly begins to pull the arm into itself. Like the scout ship, the arm warps and disappears into the anomaly, dragging the vessel along with it. All efforts to propel themselves out of the, quicksand- like death trap all fail as they are drawn closer and closer to their demise.
The two accompanying scout ships take action. One fires its weapons on the mechanical limb, severing it from the science vessel and saving it from certain doom. The other directs itself toward the anomaly and launches several high yield energy-mines. Like the arm and scout ship the mines are absorbed into the anomaly, but there is no explosion.
Suddenly without warning there is a deafening ringing sensation in the heads of the Varns present, driving them to the brink of insanity. The unbearable ringing seems to grow and grow; the tormented Varn's are totally powerless against the mental assault as they claw their heads futilely.
Then, as abruptly as it started, the ringing stops. The only sounds left are the humming of their equipment, and a compelling voice of unknown origin reverberating in their minds whispering - Revolution... revolution...
